HEVC Encoding Forum Preview

The red shift that was reported on by some ppl here was about a sudden regression where sdr content, not DoVi, got wrongfully tone mapped and has since been sorted.

Currently the Old Player is the only way to playback HEVC content on the AppleTV HD and older iPad devices with Plex. The MPV player and the new Experimental player have issues with HEVC content on those devices (though third party players such as Infuse do not have the same issue, and HEVC is officially supported by Apple on those older devices).

EDIT: A possible solution may be black listing those older devices either in the plex client or server and forcing all HEVC media to transcode to h264.

Thanks

Thank you for sharing that. I apologize for miss-stepping .

I’ll step back until needed.

Not really a miss step, just a little stumble… Lol

No misstep :).

But perhaps it is time for Plex to think about limiting the features on these old devices and forcing only h264 playback? I understand that they are 9 years old and that is doesn’t always make sense to force full support for outdated devices.

I think I may have a workaround to my issue, I have updated my tdarr settings to use .ts output instead of mkv, so Plex doesn’t see it as a new file and retains the markers.

Still can’t record HEVC with this latest version, unfortunately. Same thing happens as on day 1 of the first HEVC release.

HEVC transcoding while recording to DVR isn’t working for me unfortunately; it looks like it’s starting to record, the activity indicator ring spins for a few seconds then it stops. It still records normally if transcoding during recording is off.

@9Blowout can you attach logs?

@chris_decker08 Is this on the radar?

So I think I have encountered a bug when using this preview version and the Plex Android client on a Samsung Galaxy Tab A8. The quirk here is that the Tab A8 doesn’t support HEVC. When HEVC transcoding is enabled on the server this results in an immediate “an error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again”.

My connection is of course just fine. When I disable the HEVC transcoding the same video starts playing immediately. There seems to be some problem negotiating the proper codec between the Android client and this server preview when the client device doesn’t support HEVC.

@charlie2alpha this is a known issue on the android client which should be resolved in the next update or two

Didn’t see it on the known issues list. Looking forward to the fix, using HEVC is much more efficient.

I guess its not on the known issue list because its not an issue with PMS as this point but android, so future server updates won’t be able to fix anything.

Chris, could these be similar to the issue we see with the old player on Apple devices? It sounds like a similar error message on the client.

@dklein no, apple handles reporting hevc/hdr support correctly

EDIT: My error. Tautulli incorrectly reported SDR playback.

I see the note about DOVI transcodes being off the table. But HDR10 appears to also be getting converted to SDR when I test on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019. Is this expected?

@RxBrad are you plugged into a sdr screen or a hdr screen?

Oops, my bad. Looks like Tautulli was mis-reporting the transcoded stream.

ah, it is to be expected when you plug the shield into a sdr screen such as a computer monitor or old tv, but not when plugged into a hdr screen such as a newer tv.

I will note, however, that DoVi direct play seems to have regressions from the Public release for many videos. Files either don’t play, or play in SDR with odd color shifts. (Nvidia Shield 2019 Pro)

Transcoding these files just gives a “Unable to play media” error.
