HEVC HW-Encoding

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314 debian 12.8 Intel 13900
Player Version#: 1.107.2.30-7093f413 Windows

I just tested HW Hevc Encoding. I works fine.

How works it on 4k content?
Is it possible to transcode a 4k movie (60 Mbit bitrate) to a 4k low bitrate (e.g 30 Mbit)?
This would be very nice to watch 4k over a 50 mbit DSL connection.

I would keep the preset bitrates so that the quality is doubled.
In the quality dropdown menu there shoud also be an info, if transcoding selected is HEVC or 264.
May be an other way cloud be “user made transcoding presets”, so that everyone is able to setup his server to his hardware and internet connection capabilities . I know it is a lot of work and complicated to realize…

thanks

Michael

You can watch 2160p HEVC as 20 Mbps video and it’s not too bad.

Here’s a screen capture of 25 Mbps with HEVC - (1/2 the DSL rate). The source is 70 Mbps.

But will I get 1080p or 2160p ? What i meen is 2160p HEVC with low bitrate in 2160p output resolution.

I did some checking on the resolution too.

It will depend on the device but I can get 20 Mbps 4K.

An interesting “trick”

  1. Set the player to request Maximum / original (which means 4K)
  2. Set the server to only allow 20 or 25 Mbps network usage for the remote stream (per stream limit)

Results:

  1. player asks for 4K
  2. Initial negotiation is 4K - 70 Mbps
  3. Server says: NO NO – 25 Mbps (not inpacting the resolution)
  4. Player gets 4K, about 20-22 Mbps for video, 2Mbps for audio.

I did the same test on my iphone as I stepped down from 4K → 240p
It keeps the higher resolution as long as it can and have a usable image.
