HEVC video is transcoding on Chromecast Ultra (continued from dead post)

This is a continuation of BUG: Plex improperly forces transcoding HEVC content to chromecast ultra in android app

It’s 2021 and this still happens.

Don’t have exact media info at the moment (because it’s a Saturday night and I’m trying hard to not ruin family time by getting into debug mode).

Hi,

When HEVC videos are transconding for me it is often a problem with the subtitles. If you are using subtitels, is the file SRT?

There are no subtitles involved. If you look at the linked topic you’ll see that this is a widespread issue with Chromecast Ultra.

Just wanted to make sure. I have problemes my self so i know it is a problem, but often the subtitles are the problem and other times a restart of plex on the CC ultra is enough for it to work.
The last few days i have had other problem though. It would play correctly, but wouldn’t pull more bandwith than 5-8 Mpbs… But i think disabling UPnP on my router solved that.

Ok, so it seems like I’m not the first person who identify this problem but don’t know how to fix it.

My set up is plex server → mobile → chromecast ultra.

So when i play 4k content on my mobile (tried both andriod to ios) I can play it as “direct stream”/“Direct Play” with no lag. However when I try to stream it on my chromecast ultra - and it then tries to transcode to 4k H264, which causes significant lag/buffering.

Anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks

yes i posted this must have been years ago now, and forgive me i don’t hang out on these forums but i am back due to issues with the new’sh ccwgtv and plex.

but i modified the Chromecast.xml profile for my original chromecast and then more importantly the chromecast ultra, way back when and have been happy with it ever since.

This started working for me randomly, but broke again last night. Maybe there’s something specific about some media (which I haven’t been able to detect) that causes it to break.
