Hidden 200mbps Remote Quality Limit

Server Version#: 1.23.2.4656
Player Version#: 8.17.1

Howdy guys. I noticed that on AndroidTV/FireTV the “Maximum” remote streaming quality actually has a value of 200mbps. This is different compared to pretty much every other client which all seem to be truly uncapped. Is there any chance we can get a true unlimited value on Android as well?

Here is a snippet from the logs showing the hidden value being applied:

DEBUG - [Transcode] Streaming Resource: Required bandwidth unknown (media requires deep analysis) Changing decision parameters provided by client to fit bandwidth limit of 200000kbps

I have deep analysis disabled on my server and this leads to pretty much everything transcoding when the mde is called upon- even files with bitrates as low as 2mbps. A true “Maximum” value would be invaluable for working around this issue

Under Video Quality, do you have Adjust Automatically turned ON ?

I would think with this set to OFF, you wouldn’t run into this transcoding problem

Hey @hthighway. I recognize you! I appreciate your quick responses to several of my threads. However Adjust Automatically is indeed disabled. The root cause is actually due to Plex Media Server being unable to parse the audio-bitrate metadata for EAC3 audio tracks in MKV containers (without a deep analysis anyway). It’s been several years since I pointed it out but I guess it’s not considered a high priority issue

Not having audio-bitrate metadata is fine for most clients. Plex calculates an astronomical bitrate requirement without the properly parsed metadata. Even if it calculates a 2mbps video needs 2gbps of bandwidth it’s fine since the Plex clients usually disregard the bandwidth estimation completely if you set Maximum Remote Quality. However AndroidTV seems to have a hidden Max value of 200mbps that causes such files to transcode instead (both video and audio)

Here is my thread about the missing metadata issue: PMS Can’t Detect MKV Audio Metadata
