HiFi Audio

Hi All ,

Can we play flac audio in 192k 24bit to an apple tv or chromecast box from a windows plex server and use siri or alexa voice commands to request music playback? Can we use an amazon dot or something or an iphone to deliver voice commands?

I’d like to use a nice digital to analog converter to receive the hdmi from the apple tv or chromecast box… maybe a topping dac with xlr balanced analog outputs

what if it’s just 1 room? could we simply plugin a plex server usb into a usb dac and then be good to go with directly playing flac 192k 24bit and use alexa and an amazon dot for voice commands? i know that amazon hd also has 192k 24bit music streaming playback, may be open to do that instead of flac. seems sonos is ok for multi room also, yet unclear if it does 192k 24bit or does it just bump down to 320kbps. i will ask them.

thanks just trying to help my parents and community with great music listening , trying to find balance with functionality, simplicity, price, hifi . the quest continues

Have you already tried Plexamp?

Chromecast depending on device will resolve to 48000khz by default.

I have used an apple tv HDMI out into a HDMI extractor into a schiit audio Dac/amp and used Plexamp to control the music playback. It’s an easy setup and works well but not ideal. I also do not own any music that is hi res, Redbook CD 44.1khz 16bit Is all I own.

You could very easily have a laptop or mini computer with screen as the server and playback machine. Just plug a USB Dac into machine and your parents and community could use the regular Plex app or Plexamp on that machine for playback control.

That might be the most user friendly approach. The Plex htcp app with a remote would be easy to teach and use.

As for Alexa support or Siri. I have no experience with either as I don’t like to use voice commands.

Hi Ryuzaki_2,

Very Cool thanks - great suggestions & info, yes I like simple & easy.

Yes Schlit looks nice, n Plexamp looks handy. Is this the Plex htcp app , and use with what type of remote?

John

Hi John,

Yes that is the HTPC. The software is on the Plex Downloads Page. Then scroll down and grab the one that works for your OS.

As for remote controls. I don’t have any recommendations. But the HTPC app can pretty much handle any bluetooth remote or infrared remote. And if your remote doesn’t work there is a Support Article to help you get it to work.

I have not used any Flirc products but friends have recommended. Flirc has a product that lets you use your current remote with a computer. That might be something you can try. In my HTPC I had several years back, I used a Xbox 360 remote.
