I have a Monthly Plex Pass which enables me to use hardware transcoding on playback. However when I enable hardware transcoding by claiming my local server my router reports alot of traffic going to plex.tv. This suggests the stream is going over my WAN connection while it should be routed internally. When I go into the settings and sign myself out the hardware transcoding option disappears but then traffic at least is not going over my WAN connection.
Why is plex using my WAN connection while I have my server positioned locally?
Background information:
Server is located in a separate VLAN. However plex ports are allowed for a direct connection.
By signing in your server you’ll get automatically a FQDN on the plex.direct domain and a fitting TLS certificate for your server. Which then enables the server to use encryption. But the certificate is ‘pinned’ to the FQDN of your server - it is not valid for the plain local IP address of the server (nor any local hostname you may be using in your local network).
And if your ISP’s DNS server is poor or your router has an active DNS rebinding protection (which is misfiring on plex’s use of the DNS system) then the traffic may go over the WAN address.
