I’ve been having this problem for a while now with different versions of the server (I’m on the latest PlexPass version on the server). The client, according to Kernel log, is: ‘OpenELEC release: Plex-Intel-3.2.4-234-Plex-Home-Theater-1.4.0-55ef29e.x86_64’.
Playback of content isn’t the issue, it works great, even with high-res audio formats like DTS-HD etc. However, whenever I pause playback, the CPU load on the PMS increases so far that the fans start kicking in. Is there any reason for this behavior? Known bug of the OpenPHT version I’m using, should I upgrade to 1.5.2?

From the info you provided you are not running Embedded OpenPHT, but a very old (> 1 year) version of OpenELEC/PHT, suggest you switch to Embedded OpenPHT - https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/210168/release-openpht-embedded-1-5-2

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll have a look, to me it’s also important that remote control via JSON (and in extension from my Control4 system) works. Is there an upgrade path from openELEC/PHT to Embeddded? Or is it a reinstall?

Thank you again - I did the update to 1.6.2 Intel build (1.6.2.123-e23a7eef), WITHOUT having to reinstall everything. It JUST WORKED. 
Another problem I now have with this build is that the search bar stay on screen when I skip forward/backward. It used to disappear after 5 or 10 seconds. But it’s a minor nuisance, I can usually get rid of it with the “info” or “menu” remote command.
PS: The annoying high cpu load and the accompanying loud fan noise are gone!

The fan noise on the Intel NUC is back. Even when not using it, I get a periodic noise from it. It’s like it’s spinning up and down, every 20 seconds or so.
I’m running the latest 1.7.1 Intel build of OpenPHT. Before that I was on 1.6.2, had the same problem. The noise after installing 1.6.2 came back after about a month or so.
“top” shows the following processes causing the most load right now… while the system isn’t in use. But I get the fans briefly spinning up every 20 seconds or so.

Any advice or other diagnostics I can run is highly appreciated. I don’t believe that the hardware is overly taxed by running only OpenPHT.
what skin are you using? just default?
