High CPU Usage resulting in server crash

Server Version#: 1.25.9.5721-965587f64
Player Version#:4.76.1

Windows 11
Intel i3-1115G4
8GB DDR4 3200MHz

Plex process has started using a minimum of 30% CPU usage going up to 90%+ which will ultimately result in server “crash” The Plex Server application is still running but everything offline and unreachable, even locked out of Server Settings.

I’m wondering if maybe I’m not seeing similar issues? My Plex server, on Windows 10, doesn’t crash as often as before but still occasionally. And today, I noticed that with nothing really using my computer, the CPU usage was pegged. Looked it up and the Plex Media Server was using a lot of the CPU, and there were a few ‘PlexScriptHost.exe’ running. I killed the server application from the task bar and restarted Plex. It seemed OK but then I looked a bit later and the server was using between 70% and 90% CPU with very high power usage.

  • Nobody is watching anything.
  • No Recordings to the DVR are happening.
  • No action of any kind is happening on the server.

… so why is the CPU usage for plex so high? @BigWheel, you will notice in the screen capture below the ‘Antimalware services executable’ which is the MS Defender Antiviurs Service’.

Please let me know when you’ve downloaded the log file so I can remove it from the post.

Well I hope you get it sorted, this issue was ignored as you can see and I have stopped using Plex since, too many issues ignored, too many useless features forced upon us.

@dzeff I’m gonna need to get some other folks to look at logs, but I see a bunch of errors in analysis logs and some in scanner logs as well.

@dzeff were there any crash logs in %TEMP% or %TMPDIR%

@BigWheel , I am not seeing any crash logs in %TEMP% (C:…\AppData\Local\Temp) with ‘Plex’ in the name. Is there a specific naming format that I can look for?

And %TMPDIR% does not go anywhere, another suggestion maybe? I looked in C:\Windows\Temp and there was no plex crashes either

I found where the crashes are supposed to be “…\Plex Media Server\Crash Reports\1.26.2.5797-5bd057d2b” but all of the directories are empty.

Sadly, it looks like I’ve had too many crashes? Pulled this from Plex Crash Uploader.log

May 25, 2022 05:06:10.706 [2292] ERROR - Too many crashdumps detected / retries disallowed!

yeah the uploader is rate limited but should have been in the that temp folder when cannot upload to us (the other was for linux i think, sorry for confusion)
