High CPU usage with Hauppauge tuner

Hi there,

I just received and configured my DUALHD WINTV tuner.

I cannot watch live TV from my laptop’s browser as it freezes every 2 seconds. The CPU of the Plex Media Server is 90/95% loaded, I guess this explains the freezes.

It works better from my Samsung TV’s Plex app. But still, my CPU is loaded (+50%) when watching live TV.

EDIT: it stays at around 50% when streaming normally. Whenever I change the subtitle language for instance, the CPU jumps to 100%

I’m not sure whether this is normal or not. Plex Media Server is installed on a MinisForum U700 (quite recent) computer with a i5-5257U Intel CPU (may be not the best but still good).

I read somewhere that HDHomeRun products could be better as they encode the stream directly. So less work for Plex. Is that right ? I’d be surprised that the WINTV USB dongle doesn’t encode streams.

EDIT : the buffering is also quite long (5 seconds) when switching channel. This is not very friendly. Once again: normal behavior? THanks

Hi again, don’t bother,

I returned the tuner to Amazon: live TV stopped working after 30 min, no channels could be streamed. Plex was complaining about “check your tuner”.

I will try the HDHomeRun
