I have a modest home theater with a blu-ray player, tivo, receiver and tv. I have plex running on a linux system in my office. The plex player in the home theater has been the tivo, but that has never really worked well. What would be recommendations for a plex player in this type of setup?
The obvious ones will be e.g. the new Nvidia Shield, a recent Roku or an Apple TV 4K.
There’s other Android TV based boxes – I have no personal experience with those.
Personally I like the Apple TV with the new player currently available to Plex Pass users.
For most TV’s in my house I simply use a Roku because any modern version is basically “plug and play” and it plays nearly everything. However, you’re using a home theater, and if you want DTS-HD MA or Dolby TrueHD audio, the Roku won’t play them natively, it’ll transcode them. It’ll still sound good! But you’d lose things like Dolby Atmos. Also, I find refresh rate switching to be limited. The best option for those is either the Shield, or a HTPC with PMP. I don’t have any experience with Apple TV, it might be fine too.
