Sadly, still not a word from Plex in any shape or form.
Still not a word from Plex…
Issue is still there…
Losing hope in Plex’s ability to fix this issue.
Months go by and still the same problem on the Android version. Why do PLEX developers never respond to our expectations? It is not normal that a subject like this, discussed at length in the forum, remains unanswered and unsolved, while all, I mean all other players play their videos correctly. In this competitive universe, it is obvious that PLEX is not going to gain market share if they abandon their community.
I can understand that an issue like this may be complicated and take some time, but I’m also disappointed in the lack of response for what seems to be a common, reasonable, and significant complaint.
For comparison, I recently submitted a similar type of complaint on MediaMonkey: that same day their team asked for some additional information, which I provided. Within a week they had a response explaining the issue. Within a month they released a new build with a bugfix. Very stark contrast.
I am not happy to report that the issue is still ongoing and that there was no attempt from Plex to fix, communicate, or set the expectations. Feels like Plex is ignoring the issue in the hope that a small number of paying customers who are vocal about it will give up and move away, hopefully still paying their monthly subscriptions.
@tom80H and @sixones, please advise what can I do to have this issue fixed, or whom should I contact to have this issue fixed.
Can you provide a sample that has the problem, and send me a link via a DM? Will take a look.
I recently upgraded my server to 1.41.6.9685 and my Android app to 2015.15.0, and the behavior appears to have changed (though still incorrect). Difficult to be 100% sure since I no longer have the old app for comparison but:
- Formerly, videos which should have been presented in a portrait mode orientation were rotated 90° but presented in the correct aspect ratio. Generally rotated 90° counterclockwise, which I assume is a function of how I hold my phone when recording.
- Those same videos now play upside down and in a “stretch to fill the screen” aspect ratio.
I recorded new videos in all four possible orientations:
A) Landscape “correct” orientation (0° rotation)
B) Portrait mode correct orientation (90° clockwise)
C) Landscape mode “upside down” orientation (180° clockwise)
D) Portrait mode upside down orientation (270° clockwise)
On desktop (Plex Web and VLC), all four videos are presented in the proper rotation (ie, any “upside down” filming is corrected) and landscape vs portrait aspect ratio.
On Android:
- Videos A and C are correct (rotation and aspect ratio).
- Video D is presented upside down but in the correct portrait aspect ratio.
- Video B is presented upside down and in a “stretch to fill” aspect ratio.
@sixones:
A zip of all four new videos is available here if helpful:
Thanks for the files, checking with 2025.15.0 and I’m seeing that; “rotation, portrait, upside down” (upside down), and “rotation, portrait, correct” (incorrect aspect ratio) are incorrect, but the other two are correct. Is that what you are seeing as well?
That’s correct:
- Any video taken in landscape appears to play completely correctly in all tools.
- Any video taken in portrait mode appears to play upside down in Android. Additionally, when specifically taken in “normal” portrait mode (phone rotated so that the camera is at the top) presented both upside down and in a stretch-to-fit aspect ratio.
Thanks for clarifying, it looks like 2015.16 matches the existing client. Will take a look at why they are the wrong way around, and why the one is stretched when taken in normal portrait.
Thanks so much, I’m excited to see progress on this! I’m sure you guys have lots on your plate with the new app and all; I really appreciate you looking into this.
Guys, I’ve given up ![]()
Version 2025.15.0 no longer supports home videos if they are in the “Photos” library, where all of my home videos are. Photos and Videos in Photos Library are only accessible via Plex Photos app, which has been in early access since the day it was released and has worse performance, and once you get it to work, it has the same video problem as the main Plex app.
I wish someone had given me a heads up that Plex is moving away from Home photos and videos back in December, but it is what it is.
Thanks @Josh_Kitten for pointing out that everything works fine out of the box on Jellyfin. I’ve installed it and it works just fine for me as well.
For anyone following this, just noting that I’ve upgraded client, server, and mobile device and the issue persists as previously described:
- Android app v2025.16.0
- Server v1.41.7.9823
- New device Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra
Behavior is unchanged:
- Videos taken in portrait mode are displayed upside down in Android.
- Additionally, videos taken in “normal” portrait mode are displayed in an improper “stretch-to-fit” aspect ratio.
Another update:
On a whim I installed Kodi on my Android device then tried playing these videos through PM4K. In that environment all videos appear to be shown in the proper orientation and aspect ratio.
It seems very odd to me that this unofficial Plex interface performs better in this regard than the native application. I’m going to try the same on Roku when time permits.
Edit: apparently there is no official Kodi client for Roku. Boo. Maybe I’ll try this on Fire, but that looks like some side loading headache.
I am able to run PM4K in Kodi on Android and screen mirror to my Roku. This method rotates all videos in the proper orientation and I suppose is technically “Plex rotating videos correctly on Roku”, but is obviously quite cumbersome. Much more convoluted than using Jellyfin, though with the advantage that Plex tracks the watched status of my playlist (a necessary aspect, in my use case).
Still hoping this gets fixed. Just FYI for anyone who may land here looking for workarounds.
Hey Josh,
Seems like you have taken on my torch. Not sure how to feel about that. I have my doubts that this issue will be resolved.
Thanks for recommending Jellyfin to me. My friends, family, and I are enjoying it quite thoroughly. The most prevailing sentiment is “Its like Plex, just without para-social media nonsense.” And everyone universally loves the more responsive front end ![]()
Take care ![]()
I’m going to keep pushing on this one as long as I can: in the real world I’m a software product manager so problems like this irk me professionally, plus I’ve got a zillion home movies and a wife and kids who want me to find a way to watch them without hurting their necks ![]()
Glad to hear Jellyfin’s working for you!
Delighted to report major progress: on Android v2025.19.0 all videos appear to be correctly rotated and in the proper aspect ratio! As far as I can tell, this now works perfectly on Android. Thanks so much!
It does not appear to be working properly yet on Roku (v7.36.15), but I’ll keep an eye out for updates over the coming weeks and perhaps that’s in the pipeline.
Very happy to see this, thanks so much Plex for working on it.
My God, finally!
This update made my day ![]()
Although it’s too late to save my subscription, I am delighted to see this issue resolved.
I would love to see this improved for the Native Roku Plex app. so many home videos are all rotated 90 degrees and if they would just be oriented correctly.
