I have some random home videos that play upside down. Not all but some. Odd thing is, the snapshot is the correct orientation so everything looks fine but once you actually play it, it’s flipped.
Found a couple of threads about this but they are really old or older and closed but seemed to have died on the vine with no follow-up. Home Videos Upside Down
Are they videos you made with your phone? I think there is orientation data in them that Android TV might be picking up on direct play. If you force them to transcode ( you can lower quality to force it) does it play the correct way in Android TV?
I’m unclear on how you do this? There isn’t an option when playing the video on the Sony TV to change this. I’ve been tracking this issue in the beta program here.
If that is our Android app while playing bring up the controller and there shoudl be a gear menu to change playback settings such as quality, subtitles, etc
Sorry, you’re right. It’s a photo library. Videos are taken on a phone, have the correct orientation on Plex Android mobile, PMP, Plex for Windows and Plex Web, but not Plex for Android TV (on a Sony TV - not sure how significant this bit is).
Thanks BigWheel, they are videos I made with my phone. I tried going to the gear and changing the video quality, same issue. They play fine on my PC with the installable Plex app while playing direct. The thing that really gets me is preview frame/snapshot is the correct orientation. I’d expect that to be flipped too.
The preview image/snapshot would be made by the server not the Android app. I think it has something to do with the player on the Android app specifically. Can I ask what brand/model phone you have? I’m hoping one of our Android Devs or QA folks have one to reproduce since I have not seen that from videos from my phone.
I have a Galaxy S10. I understand about the snap being made by the server which is all the more reason it’s perPLEXing (see what I did there?). The Sony TV is Android 8.0 with the play store app installed. I need to test one of my Firestick’s on another TV to see if it’s the same.
I have a galaxy s10 as well. My s7 worked fine. Windows 10 with Plex plays fine but Fire TV Stick 4k plays upside down. If I did it right, forcing transcoding did not fix it.
Hi All,
I have been facing same issue with the the movies that I have recorded on mobile phone and when viewing them in Android TV.
a) My TV app has version 7.30.2. Some of the videos that I captured on my DSLR seems OK.
b) When viewing same movies on my laptop using windows plex - they seems OK.
So i think the issue is only in Android TV. Can someone please help.
I have tried with following devices:
HiMedia SV10
Sony BRAVIA 4K UR2
I can confirm that. I use fire TV stick (4k) with installed Plex app from Amazon store. My videos taken with my phone are all upside down or videos which are not in landscape are squeezed and not playable. Tested with two phones and two formats x264 and x265 On Plex for Android or windows I have no problems to play them
I can also confirm that I’m experiencing this bug with the Plex app on firestick 4k. Home videos (some but not all) are displayed upside down, or have been filmed in landscape but rotated on the screen and squeezed into landscape. Very strange. Only started recently and it’s doing it with videos that were recorded ages ago and used to play fine, so I assume it’s an issue in a recent firestick app update. The videos play fine in all other Plex players (web, iOS etc). My videos were recorded with iOS devices so the issue isn’t just with android videos as mentioned in the posts above.
Just to update on this. I’ve found that reducing the H264 maximum level ‘fixed’ the issue but obviously is transcoding everything. I went down to 1.1 and it worked up to 3.2, but when I tried 4.0 (the level of the video) it went back to direct play and the video was flipped again. I’ve gone into advanced settings and turned off ‘enable new video player’. This seems to have fixed it as I can now keep the H264 on the recommended level (5.2) so the vast majority of video will direct play, but when it comes across one of these videos that was experiencing the ‘flipping’ issue, it transcodes with the reason ‘direct play was attempted but failed’. Audio is still played direct. Hope this helps someone until a proper fix is applied in an update.
Hi, sorry for the delay in replying, I was trying to find a video that does this but didn’t have my kids in it. The video I’ve linked to here is one from a gig I went to a couple of years ago that was recorded in portrait and since turning off the ‘new video player’ on the Plex app on the 4k fire stick it now plays correctly through transcoding. However, if I turn the new player back on, the video plays inside a portait ‘box’ but it has been rotated 90 degrees within that box meaning it is the wrong orientation, but also very stretched out.
This same video works absoulutely fine in all other plex players (iOS, browser etc).
Thanks for looking into this.
