Home videos added as a Photo library - year is always 1969

I’m trying to add my home videos using a Photo Library because the Timeline view is pretty nice. No matter what I do, the year for all of them is 1969, meaning the timeline basically can’t be used. How do I get the year to populate using the file’s timestamp. It seems to work ok with pictures, but not videos.

I am having the exact same problem. In photo library all videos are 1969. The timeline is correct for photos.

Great, nobody’s answering. I’m also having this problem.

I can say that it is certainly something in the metadata generated for only some of my videos, and I can point to which ones are doing it (those I recorded with a Panasonic camcorder). But it is NOT anything to do with timestamps on the files, which are correct for the time they were recorded and copied over.

A problem has already been raised wit the plex development teams with regards to photos in timeline. The issue arises because Epoch Dates are used and these start in 1970.

Could you provide as example the video file properties and what mediainfo (MediaInfo) shows in terms of dates and what Plex timeline is showing

I put the MediaInfo output for 3 videos below. Two have the bug, one does not. The ones that do not work are missing date fields, such as Encoded_Date, Tagged_Date, and com.apple.quicktime.creationdate.

00041.MTS.txt
Shows 1969 in Plex: Yes
File date modified timestamp: July 5, 2015 08:22:04 AM
Source: Panasonic AG-HMC45 camcorder

2011-03-05_16-26-57_660.3gp.txt
Shows 1969 in Plex: Yes
File date modified timestamp: August 18, 2012 03:55:04 AM

IMG_2308.MOV.txt
Shows 1969 in Plex: No
File date modified timestamp: July 11, 2016 5:33:54 PM

Thank you. I have raised this with the development team

Could you tell me if camera upload was used in getting any of these videos to the library?

If it was, i need server and app logs - preferably verbose and debug when such file gets uploaded.
The specific one of the 3 is of course the Motorola Atrix Phone - if this video was uploaded by the Plex for Android app?

No, Plex camera upload was not used. PMS was installed onto my QNAP and pointed at the multimedia directory. The media has until now accumulated through file copy operations, email, or saving from Google Photos and iCloud.

@sa2000 Is this defect a priority for the next release? Is there a date planned for the next release?

Could this be related to this thread? https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1434238

Same problem. Pretty obvious what’s going on. The media metadata is the source of dates, but not all cameras put the date metadata into their media.

I have no information on this. It has been raised with the development team and it will get looked into

Could you tell me the library category these videos are in
And the version of Plex Media Server that is being used

Apologies, I did not see your response a few days ago.

The category is “Pics and Videos”. The PMS version is 1.5.5.3634. The hardware is a QNAP TVS-473 NAS.

Hi - the development team are looking into this now but have not been able to reproduce the problem so that the fix can be tested. Could you provide a sample file - you could upload on dropbox or similar service and send me a link by private message

Responded via DM

Thank you. Problem is now being fixed and in the absence of a date tag, the file last modified date and time will be used

This seems to have been resolved in the PMS version I just installed on the QNAP.

Interesting - there have been some fixes for date related issues but the specific fix for missing date attributes is not released yet. Will look into how it got fixed.

Did you need to recreate the library to fix the timeline for the videos already uploaded?
