Home vs Friends user

I run and manage a plex server for several family and friends. I want them all to be able to use plexamp on their phones to stream music that I also host for them.

Do I have to add them as Home users for this to work? Plexamp doesn’t allow invited friends to login. Is this a security risk to me or my server if I invite them as a home user? I don’t understand why they need to be.

Thanks!

Plex Home is by design for users in your household whom you trust accordingly (e.g. they can see your other home users and switch between them requiring only a 4-digit pin).

Plex Home isn’t intended to share your Plex Pass with all your friends so they don’t need one.

I understand but that doesn’t address my question about why plexamp doesn’t allow non-home users to stream music?

Also I just created this post after having read that very link. It doesn’t address my specific security related questions exactly either. It sounds like the security risk is more for the invited user being a member of home rather than for the server/admin. No?

To use Plexamp, the user needs a Plex Pass. They can then select from what library they want to stream music – no matter if that’s a shared or own library.

Personally I consider the fast user switching w/ a pin quite a security risk. If they guess your pin, they worst case impersonate you on your own server and mess it up.

That’s exactly my point! So since plexamp doesn’t allow my invited friends to stream music I have to open myself and other home users up by adding them as home users as well!

That’s incorrect.
They can very well use Plexamp – if they buy a Plex Pass for themselves.

Why would they do that when I’m the one who paid $120 for plex pass and host the server specifically for them? They don’t have any content or need for it other than to stream music using their phones. Plexamp is great so far IMO but $120 per user for them to use an app? I don’t think so.

They can stream through the regular Plex app.
That’s free on most platforms, except the mobile version (also included in Plex Pass or for a 1-time activation via in-app purchase).

Thanks for the confirmation. That’s really unfortunate that we are nickel and dimed for software that is so buggy. There is no way I could convince my users to spend money with as many issues as I have to help them through with regular streaming on their various devices as it is. Just last night we attempted for the 100th time to use the watch together feature which is still broken years later and don’t get me started on Sync which is now Downloads. We had to turn to resilio sync instead for this which ends up being a better solution so you aren’t locked into the plex ecosystem.
