How about fixing Remote Access?

Long time user and lifetime plex pass holder here. Back when I had comcast I was able to use plex remote access just fine. I’ve switched to century link awhile back and since then it has not worked. I use a router (Asus RT-AC87U) to my qnap server and that router is connected to my century link modem (Actiontech C1900A) to century link. I have tried many times to make this work, but unless I connect my qnap directly to the Actiontech modem (which I have not done), I don’t see this is going to work as I have tried ever possible combination of port forwarding I can think of in both the router and the modem… My router has advance security implemented in it, so I really do want to keep the qnap connected to it instead of going directly to the modem. I know it could work the way I want it to if the configurations were designed a bit differently in plex server software as I also have a Tablo 4-Tuner OTA DVR connected in the same fashion through this equipment and it’s remote connections work fine. The only difference I can really see is the Tablo uses 2 sets of ports with both a private and public port assignment for 4 ports in all. Plex only has a single port assignment to work with and I have seen 2 different ports listed if the manual check box is left unchecked. Why do it this way? If someone in engineering department at plex took a look at how the Tablo works, it might be the better way as it is straight forward for the customer to setup easily and it just works. Please forward this to the engineering people to consider.

Thanks.

Remote access does work you just need to get it setup right on your system.

Can you confirm the WAN IP of your Asus and make sure that matched what canyouseeme.org shows
What port did you setup for forwarding?

Agree with this comment. You may want to verify your router isn’t closing the port for Plex. I had an ASUS router at one point that would open the port initially when the Plex server was rebooted but after about 5-10 minutes it would close the port. Even when configuring the port forwarding on the router, it still didn’t work properly. Obviously a bug in the router’s software. Needless to say, I don’t have that router any longer and I don’t have any issues with remote access unless I’m somewhere that specifically blocks a certain range of ports (i.e. my general use wifi at work).

The router’s firmware became corrupted, most likely by hacking attempts. Was difficult to fix but I have it working now. Thanks for the replies.

Well I have to ask… everything worked til the moment things changed on your network? So the solution is demand Plex fix remote access… wow!!
