What is the exact differences between the two media players for mac?

Plex for Mac (or Windows) is a desktop player. It’s look & feel is oriented at the Plex Web interface but it has some additional features (e.g. better codec support, download / local playback options…).

Plex Media Player is considered as a HTPC client, e.g. if you want to connect your computer directly to a TV. It’s look & feel is more like that you’ll get for the Plex apps on the big screen.
