How Can I Allow Full Quality Remote Streams?

Server Version#: 4.22.2
Player Version#:

I only share my PMS with my family who are not far from me and I’ve asked them to do a bandwidth test which seems more than sufficient to stream my 1080p HD content from my server. I’m not sure if there’s a setting on my PMS that is degrading the quality of my streams to their remote player (XBOX1) but everything I can see them play gets transcoded from 1080p to SD for some reason. I don’t think their Internet quality is to blame but I’m not sure what on my PMS to change to verify that all streams are played in original quality. I don’t really understand transcoding to be honest but I’m trying to force my server to push streams at full quality only…

Here is a screenshot of my brother connecting remotely:

Here are my (relevant) PMS settings:

[Remote Access]

  • Allow remote access = enabled
  • Limit remote stream bitrate = Unlimited (original)
  • No upload limit set

[Transcoder]

  • Transcoder quality = make my CPU hurt
  • Transcoder temporary directory = /tmp
  • Transcoder default throttle buffer = 60
  • Background transcoding x264 preset = Very Slow
  • Use hardware acceleration when available = enabled
  • Use hardware-accelerated video encoding = enabled
  • Maximum simultaneous video transcode = unlimited

Can someone let me know what I can change or can do to better the remote experience to my family? The only device between my PMS and the open Internet is a Pi-hole running on a raspberry pi. Not sure if that’s at all relevant but figured I’d mention it. I can disable the pi-hole if need be but I don’t see any immediate improvement from either end.

Your user is using an indirect connection, which could be due to a double nat ( Maybe your Pi-Hole )

See: https://support.plex.tv/articles/216766168-accessing-a-server-through-relay/

your screenshot is indicating ‘indirect’ which means you have network problems, either on your local network, or your ISP perhaps using CGNAT or otherwise blocking plex connection to your server.

also

Transcoder quality = make my CPU hurt
Background transcoding x264 preset = Very Slow

these don’t really have anything to do with bandwidth, and aren’t really needed to be set as such.
