How could I sepreate the same movie or serise with different version

In my libarary would have the same movie with one more version. For example, land of ring with one Theatre version and one Extended version. Now plex combine two version as one movie. How could I seperate it as usual?

Plex has two concepts to deal with something like this:

  1. Multiple Editions/Cuts = different cuts of the same movie; this is a rather new feature and currently only available for movies (not for tv shows). Plex will show a hub of related editions on the movie’s details page but as of today there’s no option to collapse different editions into a single library item, so they’ll be listed individually on your library screen.

  2. Multiple Versions = different quality files of the same video.
Plex will collapse those items and offer you an option to pick a specific version (based on resolution and bitrate). The different versions will be listed on the item’s details page next to the audio/subtitle information (e.g. „4K and 2 more versions“)

To answer how to separate them, there are two ways I can think of. One will cause you to lose watch history of the version you change, and the other will preserver it.

1.) With preserve; go to the movie that has your two editions merged. Click on the 3 dots menu and there you’ll find an entry for “Split apart”. Clicking that will separate them and you’ll see 2 identical entries.

Once you have split them apart, open one to determine which one it is… For instance, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King extended version has a runtime of around 4 hours and 23 minutes (off the top of my head so could be mistaken). Click the pencil icon for that movie and in the dialog, identify where it says edition and change it.

2.) You could go to your file explorer and identify one of the editions. Suppose it is the director’s cut as you say; rename that one to “Name of the movie (year - if you had it){edition-Director’s Cut}.extension”. Before the extension and after the rest of the name, insert {edition-Edition name} where edition name could be anything. Theatrical release, extended version, director commentary, suuuper long version, or whatever. Having done this, scan your library for changes and it will show up as a new entry. If you had already watched it your watch history will be gone.

I find it useful to then edit the other edition in the dialog box to distinguish it.
