How do a clean re-install?

I have deleted the windows programme and the userappdata and the regedit file but still do not end up with a “new” Plex .

I am still getting the libraries which seem corrupt - how do i lose them ?

Are you positive you got all the registry entries and data folders?

The 2 windows folders shown in that article did not appear to be on my win 10 machine. I deleted the Plex folders that existed in those directories. They are not there now either.

hence the request for help

The support article only references 1 folder and 1 Registry node:

  • Folder: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server
    usually C:\Users\{your windows user name}\AppData\Local\Plex Media Server\
  • Registry node: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.

Please see attached the regedit one does not exit there is no plex entry.

I deleted the PLM folder with the app on the NAS off restarted the app but the folders still appear - I have basic computer etc skills but do not expect to have this much of an issue.

I found threads on Cloud OS5 and have DM the Plex person who was involved but have had nothing back it seems there were a few months ago a few issues with the switch to the 5 from 3 but nothing in the thread seems to make sense with my issue

Well… if you’re trying to re-install the Plex Media Server on your NAS… deleting files/configurations on your Windows machine will do no good. Could it be you simply deleted the Plex for Windows client/player app (while keeping the Plex Media Server on your NAS)?

Disabling the Plex Service on your MyCloud should do the job and will also clear all existing data.

Hi thanks for getting back. I removed all I could from the laptop and removed the app from the Nas. I then reinstalled both the Nas is a manual install. But there must be some files somewhere that make Plex show the libraries even when it refinds the Nas. There seems to be no files on the Nas so I am unable to see on the files structure where Plex is , the older version of the OS which the support files on here are I assume show it in the file structure.

Cleaning up your Windows computer won’t achieve anything if your Plex server is actually running on your WD NAS.

If you want to delete the Plex data of your server from your NAS, you must uninstall the Plex server software from it, and also get rid of the data folder which was stored on the NAS.
I don’t have any experience with these WD devices, so I cannot tell you exactly how to achieve that.
I can only see in your account that every time you tried to delete the server, it was restored afterwards. This happens if the plex data folder and the settings in it are not deleted before you re-install the Plex server software.

Thanks for answering. With the NAS the install obviously does not delete the app completely, the file view of the NAS only shows the folders not the app and I have no idea where to look. I do not want to wipe the NAS as it has music and other stuff on it so am unsure what to do. Maybe WD might know so will contact them if no Plex users etc can advise.

Check out the support article about the Plex service on WD My Cloud Home.
It describes how you can enable it on the Services section of the NAS admin interface. Clicking on the Plex icon in this section will give you an option to configure or enable/disable it. If the service has been enabled, you have the option to disable it.

From that support article:

Warning! : If you later choose to Disable the Plex service, that will also remove all installation data. Your media will remain, but all information about your library setup, watched status, etc. will be removed.

Therefore…

  1. Open your NAS Web interface
  2. Go to the Services tab
  3. Select the Plex service
  4. Click Disable and wait for it to complete disabling it.
  5. Start your Plex Media Server over by starting it again.

many thanks again uninstalled both again cleared regedit and appdata cleared services - it seems to be the recycle bin and the reinstalled - libraries still there something is being remembered somewhere

screenshots in case have misunderstood

No need to keep doing stuff in your Windows registry unless you installed the Plex Media Server there in the meantime.

It seems the tab/section on the WD My Cloud interface referred in the support article is called Apps. Did you disable the Plex service there?

Ok will not not do anything in Windows. Yes disabled in apps and have also uninstalled neither remove the libraries.

I have found this, but it is potentially dangerous. You may lose your data on that NAS completely, if something changed in in the meantime.

A slightly safer method would be to only rename the conf folder at first.
After everything worked out, delete the old, renamed folder – leaving only the new one which got created automatically by install the plex server software.

But both methods require some command line work.

I suggest he;

  1. Stop Plex
  2. rename plex_conf to plex_conf_old ( mv plex_conf plex_conf_old )
  3. start Plex

then when you’re happy, go and remove the plex_conf_old folder

Hi I dont want to risk losing the data on the NAS there a lot of photos so would prefer this option but excuse my ignorance can you advise where i find plex_conf.

There is a thread on OS5 and have contacted the Plex “Moderator” but as yet had no response, the thread is old and explains there were issues with swapping to O5 when it was initially released. I upgraded to 05 when it asked - the NAS is working fine with Sonos but i want Plex as have over 65000 tracks and use it for the other songs etc and to use it with Sonos.

Sorry, I don’t have any experience with these types of devices.
This is just what I found using Google-fu.

The WD website should have a guide how to reach this folder.

Otto - many thanks for your responses . It just seems all the info on both here and WD are out of date . I have spent hours googling for answers but with no luck.

I find it annoying that i pay double for Plex than either my AV or VPN but there is no formal customer service - i know this is not your fault but it is Plex’s.

Hi Both Following on from the issues discussed above I managed to get help from WD, it appears to fully remove Plex you need to utilise SSH and remove some “folders” using lines of “code”. The answer below did not come on when I searched WD or Google - I don’t know why - it could have saved lots of peoples time.

many thanks for your assistance
