How do I get forced subtitles working in Plex clients automatically?

Hi all,

I’ve ripped some blurays with embedded MKV subs and then run them through MKVToolNix to set the correct tracks to forced but Plex (on multiple clients) doesnt turn them on.

I’ve tried setting the subtitles settings in PMS to shown with foregin audio (which doesn’t work) and always enabled (which tends to turn on any and all subs embedded)

To clarify i’m talking about foreign language parts in english language films, e.g. when the apes talk in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Main clients I use are Plex for Android, Plex for Android TV and Plex for Samsung if that makes any difference.

PMS is Version 0.9.16.6 on Windows 10

Cheers,
Bowser

Have you made sure to tick the checkbox?
check if your settings are the same on this page: https://plex.tv/users/profile

Keep also in mind that the subtitle must be marked as ‘english’, not as ‘klingon’

Also, the automatic subtilte selection only works on movies, on which you didn’t touch the subtitle selector manually yet. As soon as you make a manual subtitle selection, the automatic won’t override that.
So to properly test the feature, you must use a newly added movie or perform the Plex Dance with an existing one.

Yup, settings are the same with the checkbox ticked.

Subs are marked as english so can’t be that.

Have done the plex dance and it still isn’t working (though I’m not sure the dance itself is working as when i readded the movies to my library they still had the watched information)

Currently ripping one that hasn’t been in the library before so we’ll see what happens.

So far it seems to have worked but I have a friend who I have the server shared with and on his end the subs aren’t enabled and he has to manually change them. Is there a setting on his end he may need to change or does this feature simply not work for people the server is shared for?

Thanks for the speedy reply.

Those settings are actually per user and not per server. So just send him the link
https://plex.tv/users/profile
and instruct him what to select.
(He must be logged in to plex.tv of course first.)
