My libraries look something like this:
- Anime series
- Anime films
- Documentary series
- Documentary films
- Movies
- Romanian movies
- TV Series
- Romanian TV series
- Stand ups
plus a couple others
On the web client on the home page (aka “discover”) I only have:
- Continue watching
- On deck
- Recently added movies
- Recently added tv
I want to add more sections myself or have some automatically generated sections like
- Recently released movies
- Top sci-fi movies
- Movies by Quentin Tarantino
- Best in “Anime”
- Recently added in “Documentary series”
And so on… you get the point
Netflix does it. The plex android app KIND OF does it (see below). But not the web interface. It’s a bit ironic because on the web app the home page is called “Discover”, but it does not do much to help discover anything.
Now for android

The home page is customisable, but by default (after turning the news/podcasts off) it’s pretty much empty. I have to go to “movies”, then select each of those sections and tap “add to home screen”. Individually. Now I have to do that for each one of the libraries I have, and nothing is added or suggested automatically if a new library is added, or one changes and so on.

If you tap the big movie button, or series, it only shows content from ONE of the libraries (which one it chooses by default I don’t know). After you’ve done scrolling through the “Recently added” etc of that library, you need to tap on the top left thing (also not very intuitive), select the next library, see if there’s anything new there, and so on. I would expect that going to the big button labeled movies I would see, well all the movies (or atleast the ones from libraries with this option checked), AND THEN if you wanted to browse only a specific library you would select one of them and narrow it down. It feels backwards.
I COULD kind of fix this last one on android by just deleting all libraries and just having one library for Movies (including documentaries, stand ups, romanian movies etc all bundled together) and one for TV Shows (including anime, documentary series and so on) so when I tap “movies” in the android app there is only one library it can select. But then I would lose the organizing, the “categories” I created.
Actual categories are not a thing, sharing playlists with managed users is not a thing, collections don’t feel like can be used as categories, they don’t show up as such, also no nesting/grouping libraries, “sub” libraries, anything like that.
My collection size is growing, I want to be able to better organize it, share it with friends and family and have them be able to more easily browse content, find new things, and so on. But I can’t seem to find a good way to organize and deliver it.
Other than these little frustrations plex has been pretty good for me. Sorry for the long post.
Any suggestions? Thanks.
