While playing a movie in the Plex Roku Channel, how do i get the “*” asterisk button on the Roku remote to go to the Plex settings popup like it used to do before a recent Plex app update? While playing any movie, all of a sudden the asterisk button brings up the “Options” menu on the left sidebar, which only has a few limited options. I’d like the asterisk button to bring up the “settings” menu. I beleive a recent Plex software update changed this capability on Roku devices, and I’d like to change this back.
Now the only way to get to the settings popup during movie play back is to hit the down arrow, then several left-arrow clicks over to the settings icon. This is 5 more button clicks now compared to how it was before.
Plex v5.0 build 5 on a Roku 4.
Thanks for your help.
btw, I have a Roku 3 running Plex v5.0 build 1, and the asterisk button brings up the settings popup just how I like it. Which is why I suspect this was a feature change in the Plex 5.0 build 5 software update (or some version after build 1).
Probably best to use the Roku Forum:

Has your Roku 4 gone to OS-8?
Is the Roku 3 (like mine) still at 7.7?
My Plex App is 5.05 and during playback the * brings up the settings menu - on the page where captions can be enabled/disabled, just like it has for a long while.
If your Roku 4 has gone to OS-8, and you raise the alarm on the Plex/Roku Forum the developer may like to know.
Some time ago Roku usurped the “*” button for their own purposes. Roku is about as customer responsive as Plex and they ignored the outcry from Plex users and many other folks when the did that and they did it in spite of the fact that their published documentation gave developers specific access to that button,
From what I understand many developers contacted Roku about the usurpation and were basically told to “get over it.”
It is as it is and it is extremely unlikely to change.
I think this is a new ‘unusual’ behavior, @Elijah_Baley …
My Roku 3, using 5.0.5 brings up the settings menu during playback when hitting * - as it has for some time. @dubdrive is describing a different outcome - like if I was to hit the ‘OK’ button, then have to arrow-left to the settings icon.
I’ll bet it’s down to OS-8 vs 7.7
The behavior requested is exactly what the Plex app did some time ago before and right after the introduction of the Ultra and the other Rokus that were introduced at the same time.
Before then, if the “*” was pressed during playback, Plex’s menu that shows stream info etc would pop up.
Then Roku “upgraded” the OS for the Ultra and most of the rest of the line and within a few months all the remotes that have the “" button upgraded so that the "” button behaves as now and the Roku menu now appears.
Roku made a big step backwards with that move but that is to be expected when a company forgets about its beginnings. Where have we seen that before?
I see… in that case I’m really not looking forward to OS-8.
Maybe @ljunkie can do something when OS-8 is on more units (as well as move this thread).

Actually it seems that OS-8 does not, at least for me, introduce and new problems or bug. Of course it does not seem to fix anything either.
I dunno - My Roku 3 is on version 8, build 4128-04 (the newest v8 firmware, I think) and the “*” button brings up the settings/stream information just fine using the latest Plex Pass version or the regular version.

Yeah, sorry, I didn’t see that Roku Player forum buried down in the list until after I posted this. Not sure how to move it there now, I don’t see a way to do that. I can raise this question in the Roku Player forum.
Yeah, my Roku 4 with the issue is now on Roku v8.0.0, and was probably just recently upgraded from Roku v7. The Roku 3 that works like I want is on Roku 7.7.0.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks @Elijah_Baley . I was suspicious that this may have been a bad Roku decision that negatively impacted the Plex channel. Yeah, I’m going to see if I can complain to the Roku support folks, this is a ridiculous move on their part.

That’s weird. My Roku 3 is still on v7.7.0 build 4135-04, and of course the asterisk button still pulls up the Settings popup as it should.
I’m performing the Roku v8 software update right now to see if it still works. I’ll post back with the result.

Wow, @leelynds is right. I upgraded my Roku 3 device to roku v8.0.0 build 4128-04, and the Roku Plex Channel remained on v5.0 build 1, and the Asterisk button brings up the Settings popup menu during video playback as it should.
So it looks like it’s something that changed between Plex v5.0 build 1 and Plex v5.0 build 5?
I’m on 5.0.5 with my Roku 3 (4200x) and the * brings up the settings menu when pressed during playback. I went downstairs to see what FW was on the old Roku 2 HD and had a hard time getting the app open - 'cause I was pressing the wrong button! The * is where the OK is and * won’t launch the app - that’s certain… lol.
Are you sure you’re pressing the right button?
(sorry - I had to ask…)

Haha, yeah, I’m definitely pressing the correct * Asterisk button… I’ve been using it to get to the settings popup menu for over a year on my Roku 4 and three Roku 3’s that I have on 4 TV’s in my house. All the remote controls are the same between the Roku 4 and Roku 3’s. The asterisk button is in the same place and clearly labeled with an “*”.
@JuiceWSA , what Plex 5.0.5 build number are you on? build 1 or build 5? Build 1 seems to work fine. It’s build 5 that seems to have the problem in my experience so far (regardless of Roku OS).
I’m on build 5. I am running FW 7.7 4139, the fixed version I got by leaping thru the hoops at Roku. Maybe that’s the difference.

Ok, thanks. Yeah, I’m wondering if its somehow the combination of Roku v8 with the Plex v5.0 build 5.
I wouldn’t be surprised.
Once OS8 lands on most units the Roku app developer can probably work some miracle.

Sounds like a Roku 4/Roku 3 thing. The asterisk button works on my Roku 3 with Plex v5.0 build 5 and Roku OS 8 build 4128-04 , but it sounds like it doesn’t on a Roku 4…
