How do I reconnect to library on external storage after factory reset?

Server Version#: 1.25.3.5410 (smb)
Player Version#: 8.28.0.30077 (241173d0)
Shield OS Version#: 9.0.1 (33.1.0.264)

I’ve been using PMS with the library on external storage (USB stick) for some time now.

For a number of reasons I’ve decided I want a fresh start on the Shield so have performed a factory reset.

What is the correct procedure for linking PMS back to the existing library? (I have performed some internet searches)

If I go through the initial setup there’s no “do you have an existing library?” style of behaviour.

Once PMS has initialised the only option seems to be “Modify storage location”.
If I choose “Let’s Do It!” I can select the USB device but it’s not clear what will happen if there’s a library in the destination.

I’m concerned that this will simply take the new, empty, library and nuke/overwrite my populated library. (I have backups but would prefer to avoid more complications than strictly necessary)

Can I safely proceed, or do I need to:

  • backup existing
  • create initial empty library
  • change to external storage
  • eject USB
  • copy preferences and metadata into new location
  • reconnect, restart, cross fingers

?

Define existing Library…
Are you just trying to point plex back to the media files?
Or are you trying to relink the previous isntalls plex database files?

In my head library means the server data, not the actual media files: preferences.xml and all the downloaded TV and movie metadata.

I already have this on external USB storage.

I just want the easiest/safest way to say

Hey PMS! Look at this! An existing server configuration for you to use!

after a factory reset

I haven’t done this before so I don’t know.
But maybe the two links in this reddit post will get you in the right direction.

I wish I had more information, but I myself am also just getting familiar with PMS backup and recovery/restore procedures on the shield due to the issues with the latests updates.

If i am understanding correctly the info here in last part of this post that begins with “If you’ve already setup a new Plex server…” may help.
