How does one get actual technical support (rather than lots of views w/ no replies)

Does the PC go to sleep ? I have a 5 hour gap in the logs

The 2.5 hour recording for Terms of Endearment was scheduled for 23:30 but the Plex Media Server.exe process seems not to have been running then. Does anything get logged in the windows event log about hibernation / sleep / wakeup? Check system and application event logs

The 1 hour recording for Ultimate Countdown was scheduled for 02:00am - the time when Plex Media Server.exe process does not appear to have been running - suspect hibernating / power saving
It got started when the computer came to life at 02:07 am but after sleep wakeup, it takes a while for the network connections to get to working state and so the attempt to start the recording through the network connection to the HD Homerun failed

This is a plain vanilla Dell XPS desktop computer that is less than a year old , using factory default power settings for a desktop. That makes the monitor turn off at 10 minutes and the computer go to sleep at 30 minutes. I followed the Plex set up instructions, and nowhere could I find it telling me to change the power settings to always on. I have been trying several other DVR programs to replace the excellent Windows Media Center, which is no longer being supported, and they all awaken the computer to make recordings. Even the free ones. Plex apparently awakens it also because some of the partial recordings are that I see are sections of the show that was scheduled to be recorded

I will pass your notes to the development team. This has been raised before

Plex Media Server is a server and not a DVR program - so the comparisons are not valid. But i will add it to the information we have on this.Servers are expected to be running all the time.

Allowing the monitor to turn off after 10 minutes is not a problem but everything must stay on as I said earlier once you mentioned it might have something to do with sleep/hibernation…

Thank you all for your assistance with this frustrating issue. I appreciate that. I agree that Plex Media Server is a server. It was free, I installed it and did not see a need for it. But now Plex had my email address and they promoted their Plex Pass which WOULD be a DVR, for a bunch of money. Here is what they sold me (direct from the Plex website):

When we set out to build the best DVR and Live TV platform on the planet, we knew there would be challenges. We built a scheduling engine that reins in the multiverse by considering every possible recording schedule, then picking the best one, much like the work of the late, great Stephen Hawking. Tl;dr he found that the Big Bang Theory held strange implications for the multiverse, we say bring on the reruns! We built the smoothest DVR setup experience in the West to get you up and running with a bespoke program guide in no time. We built a sophisticated, multi-layer recording engine to let you tune in and time shift while ensuring your recordings continue without a hitch. You can even skip commercials.**

That is what I thought I was paying the money for. It hasn’t worked out that way.

Thanks again for your help.
Steve

I (we) have been struggling with this for over two weeks now. If it is the fact that the DVR function requires the computer to always be on, that should be clearly stated up front. It also needs to be in the set up instructions and also in the System requirements. Then all of us could have been having a beer instead of banging a keyboard.

Well did you set the computer to never sleep/hibernate, and not turn off the disks? Its been pretty clearly stated several times in this thread that plex will not wake your computer up to record.
