I just purchased a lifetime Plex pass for $120 to enable the DVR function. Plex DVR worked several times, but now when I schedule a recording, it only records the first two seconds of the program. I posted this on the forums, got several views, but no one responded. Obviously, a DVR that only records two seconds is not worth $120 to anyone. There must be some way to contact an engineer or technical person at Plex that can suggest ways to diagnose and fix this problem. How does one contact that person??
Would love to know…
Well this is the only way to get support… I looked at your original post about the DVR only recording a couple seconds and stopping… Providing more information might help… What server version are you running??? Which HDHomerun device are you using??? Did any thing at all change or happen to/with your server between the couple times you said it worked and it didn’t??? Have you tried recording something with out using the comskip feature??? Did you try restarting the server and the HDHomerun device??? What have you tried to do to fix or find a fix for your issue???
Restart the server 5 or 10 minutes before a scheduled recording, after the recording fails, collect the log files from the server and post them so someone can see what is going on…
Providing as much information as possible, using forum tags, including the logs, operating system being used (which you did state), firmware version of the HDHomerun model (have you checked it’s the latest???), will help someone find a solution for your issue… The Moderators, Ninjas, and Developers here are good and helpful people but sometimes posts get missed… However, you also need to help them help you by providing as much information as possible…
Running Plex Version 1.14.1.5488 (latest) on a Win 10 Ver 1803, OS build 17134.523 (not a buggy update) using an HD Homerun Connect Quatro Version 20180817 (latest), storing the recordings on a WD 2 TB My Cloud NAS, I have had more failures in scheduled recordings than I have had successes. The successes seem to be when I am in the program and hit record. Sometimes a scheduled recording can work, but I have had 7 or 8 in a row that only record for two seconds. There may be a clue in the last failure that happened since I first posted about this. There is a triangular warning symbol in the recordings icon for the failed program that has a message “no write access to destination”. Searching that error message in Plex support articles did not help.
I will happily supply screenshots, logs (if you tell me where to find them) and anything else that may be required for diagnosis.
This is a permission problem between your Windows 10 server and your NAS device… It’s telling you that PLEX doesn’t have permission to write anything to the directory you chose to save the recording on the NAS…
I’m sorry but I don’t know anything about the operating system on your WD NAS… With any luck, maybe @ChuckPa can shed a little knowledge to get you going…
I do not believe that this can be a permission problem because many TV programs are successfully recorded to the NAS from Plex. Improper permissions would preclude all recordings. The successful recordings seem to be ones that begin when the computer is active (I am using it). The failures largely seem to be when the computer is inactive and will need to wake up. Nowhere have I found any Plex documentation that indicated the computer needs to be always on. Every Media program I have tested is able to wake the computer for late night recordings.
Again I have to ask “How do I get actual technical support?” I really appreciate the regular folks willing to lend a hand in trying to get to a solution, but at some point Plex, who gladly took my $120, should get involved.
Edit your category and change it to Plex Media Server + Windows Server. Attach your logs this usually gets the desired attention.
Plex can’t wake up your server.
As I mentioned before, the forums are the only available Technical Support for PLEX…
The fee paid is for the extra’s you get being a PLEX Pass member like the DVR/Live TV function… It has nothing to do with support… Sorry!!!
But have you found anywhere in the documentation that PLEX can wake up your system to record or even stream anything to your clients… In my experience (not that I’m any expert) that servers of any kind don’t work real well when they are in sleep, hibernate modes or powered off… I really suggest you leave you system on, not allowed to spin down the drive(s), switch to sleep, hibernate, or suspend to RAM at least on the nights you have something scheduled to record…
The best way to get tech support is to tag your post properly with the relevant Plex services, devices, and OSs being used.
Which I believe I mentioned in my first post to the OP…
Since the tags haven’t been modified, I thought maybe your statement had been overlooked.
The tags have not been modified because I do not know what a tag is, or where to find/create one. I used the search at the top of this page for several phrases including the word “tag”, no joy. I went to the Plex Support Articles and searched for “tags” and found articles for tagging pictures, etc, but not Posts. Please, direct me to a tutorial on tags and I will happily tag away so the proper folks will see it.
Steve
Try to go back and edit your first post… Under the Title and to the right of “category”, box there should be a box that says “optional tags”… From that drop down box, I would suggest you choose “Server-Windows” and also “Live TV-DVR”…
I have replied to your forum post,
Please do bump topics every few days if your posts do not get picked up and do try to include server logs when reporting issues together with details of what was being done, when and what the outcome was. I mentioned that in my reply
I’ve brought this up before but it was in the whole “Alternative to Plex” complaint thread.
Have you guys ever looked at https://www.redmine.org/?
Freenas uses it and it’s been working pretty well for them.
Maybe keep this forum for forum purposes but use that for bug tracking?
Whatever, just my two cents.
We experimented years ago with an open bug-tracker (LightHouse, iirc), and it just didn’t work that well. And now that we’ve standardized on GitHub Issues, they have no support for this sort of thing (public visibility of issues, not source, etc.)
All of last nights recordings failed. Here are the log files.Plex Media Server Logs_2019-02-13_07-41-16.zip (4.5 MB)
Thanks, Steve
Sorry, I just re-read the instructions for posting Logs. Here are the specs.
The computer was apparently awake because there were one second and seven second snippets recorded that I saw were from the programs. All the evening programs failed to completely record.Plex Media (4.5 MB)
could you please give me some pointers. Time of recordings ? channels or programs ?
Did this not complete ok ?
Feb 12, 2019 18:00:07.526 [12784] DEBUG - DVR:Grabber: Operation for 'ABC World News Tonight With David Muir - E43 - Episode 43' on channel 4.1 completed with status complete (Success)
Was it available afterwards in your library?
Yes, it recorded. It was set for 5:30 PM. We were watching TV at the time and it seems to be successful when we are actively using it. The recordings that failed were both on channel 44.2, Movies channel. We record this channel regularly in HD Homerun, (which I have uninstalled) and have had no problems. We usually get two seconds of recording that we can watch to see that it really was tuned to the channel. the screen shots I sent were of the failed recordings that should be in the logs.
