How does Plex assign files to categories "Movie" and "Serial"?

Hi - I don’t understand which parameters of metadata are using by Plex to assign files(movies) to correct category - Movie or Serial. Some of the files are invisible in Movie category but they are visible in Serial category and vice versa. The problem is that part of the files which should be visible for example in “Serial” category (because they are a serial) but they don’t… I’m just wondering which parameter decides about it that Plex assigns file to the category Movie or Serial… Maybe some of you knows that and can share this knowledge with me?

Thx, I saw those articles but didn’t find anything. I think, this is the naming case of my movie files but I don’t know how should be named the files recognized by Plex as a serial and as a movie… :frowning:

It’s linked in that article: Naming and Organizing Your TV Show Files | Plex Support

You need to separate tv show and movie files from each other, into separate folders and libraries.

I did it. Movies are in separate catalogues and serials as well. I’ve created separate libraries for them in Plex as well…and one serial is visible (being in Serial catalogue and Serial library in Plex) and the other is not visible (but it is visible in Movie library when I moves it there…)

How are the file and folder names?

And at which folder did you point your tv show library?

I check it once again according the article, you’ve linked and give you feedback

Hi - thanx for help. When the name of the file consists of “S01E01” string, it is enough for Plex to recognize it as a serial. Anyway I still don’t know how to put the poster on the file. I see blank files in Plex…

Wait, are we talking about regular video files?
I was under the impression you were referring to Plex’s own DVR feature. Sorry, I must have misunderstood then.

Plex has different library types for movies and tv show content. (a TV show is all types of material, which is “episodic”. Everything else is a “movie”, no matter whether it is shown first in the cinema, or on tv, or through a streaming service.)

You must separate these two types of content into different folders and assign these folders to different libraries in Plex.

Thank you - it works as you described:-)
