How does Plex Server define duplicate movies?

Server Version#: 3.77.2

I’m currently in the process of re-encoding what will probably amount to a few hundreds of movies, exchanging h264 files with h265.

When I add the newly encoded movies to my Plex files (manually), sometimes Plex picks them up as duplicates, sometimes it just shows the movie twice.

What I wonder: is there any understandable logic to that?

I don’t understand how or why for example “Hard to be a God” shows up twice in the movie browser when the underlying files are /Movies/H/Hard To Be A God.m4v and /Movies/H/hard to be a god (2013).m4v, whereas Plex was very stubborn about /Movies/S/Star Wars IV – A New Hope (Despecialized Edition).mp4 and /Movies/S/Star Wars IV - A New Hope (1977).m4v being duplicates.

Possibly.
So movies scanned by the same metadata agent habe a better chance of being recognized as duplicates, if I understand correctly?
Thanks for the hint, I’ll keep it in mind.

Precisely.
