Not detecting duplicates titles any longer

Recently updated to Version 1.18.6.2368. Windows 10. Went to add a higher resolution copy of a film and it was not detected as a duplicate. I added it to the same folder and it was only a different file type. ei. XXXXX.avi and XXXXX.mkv. Plex just added a new title and did not inform me that there was a duplicate.

Was it detected correctly as the same movie, but with its own poster? Everything below assumes so (if not, please clarify how the new file is displayed). If so, it could caused by a changing the default metadata agent for library (from Plex Movie to The Movie Database, or vice versa). If the agent is changed, Plex will identify the movie correctly but it will end up with a different GUID, since the matching agent is used as part of it. This causes it to be displayed separately.

The easiest way to correct this for a single movie is to select both in your library and then select the “Merge” option from the More menu (vertical ellipsis at the top-right). If you have many movies that were added this way, it may be easiest to movie them back out of the library, scan, empty trash, and then change the agent for the library back to what it was previously. Then move the file back and scan again.

Thank you! I did not know that. I did recently change the agent from Plex movie to TMD. I am assuming that if I change it back the problem should go away when adding duplicate files correct? I didn’t like that the metadata was pulling from Plex movie sometimes. Some posters were different etc. I guess I will just check both when I add new stuff from now on. Easier than having duplicates I don’t know of. Thanks again!

No problem, glad it helped.

That is my understanding, yes.

There is a procedure somewhere on these forums to manually modify the database and change the agent for all of a library’s existing items. I don’t have the link to that thread, unfortunately. I think @OttoKerner may be able help with that though.

Not possible to my knowledge.
You can only use the ‘Fix Match’ procedure, one-by-one.

Or Plex Dance all affected movies.
But this will cause them to appear as Recently Added again.

My mistake, I must have confused this with something else.
