How does the opensubtitle agent work?

I’ve been a subzero user for a long while, and was very displeased when Plex removed the plug-in options.
(Yeah, didn’t discover it until I moved my server from windows 7 to Linux.
Since everything was working automatically, I never logged in)

How is opensubtitle agent working, is it going to download subs to all movies?

Will it download English text to English movies (when I’ve selected English text)

How is it comparing the compatibility to the subtitles?

Will it remove my own subtitles?

Will it add more than one subtitle?

Will it automatically check for better subtitles?

I’ve got many questions about that change… anybody that can enlighten me?

No, just when you ‘Search’ for some.

Yes

Lousy

Not that I am aware of

Epilogue:

If your file isn’t named and structured properly - forget about it. Other than that I’d say 50% of the time you can find a suitable subtitle - after several shots at it, at least.

More than 80% of the time you can probably find an exact sub here:
https://subscene.com/ or https://www.addic7ed.com/

Between the three - you’re probably covered.

Maybe a stupid question, how do you search for subtitles on Plex? Haven’t seen any options for that?

You won’t - until you go Premium.

Note:
I’m not giving them $5 a month for that sub title feature - that is certain.

If you can justify a few more Plex Pass Features you could use it may be worth it to you.

I have activated the open subtitles section and I have installed my languages preferences to always enabled, but my plex player won’t automatically select my preferred language. Any ideas?

How many ‘Unknown’ audio/subtitles do you have?

Plex can’t do anything with ‘Unknown’ - unless it happens to have a ‘forced’ tag in the sub - then Plex does the only thing it knows - it turns 'em on.

If you want Plex to auto-select things - it has to know when to auto-select them.

If all your stuff is identified and the proper Language Settings are made and it still doesn’t work - prepare some Debug Logs (NOT VERBOSE) - something’s out of whack somewhere…

All this assumes you actually have the subtitles.
Opensubtitles’ web site goes down every 15 minutes it seems - so if something’s wrong with the retrieval of the subs - I’m not surprised.

Simply activating the opensubtitles agent won’t do anything.
Agents will be only active when metadata are downloaded.
So you need to “refresh metadata” on your existing movies (not all at once, or opensubtitles will rate-limit your IP within minutes).
