I’m a long time user of Google Play Music, and, as it’s going away, I think I’m going to move to Plex(Amp) for my music library.
One thing I love about GPM is how cache is handled.
If you have listen to a track once, it will be stored to cache forever, like if you downloaded it.
I really like this feature because you don’t have to worry about your download and the data it will cost you (on cellular). You just have to listen to your current music once and you’re done.
Is this achievable with Plex Amp ?
If I set the cache to max (16GB I think), will all my music be stored on my phone and don’t cost me data after I listen to them once ?
Plexamp currently allows to download playlists or mixes adding up to a total of 24 hours.
The cache is more focused on the imminent playback; settings allow to select how many songs to be cached (ranging from “only next track” up to 40 songs) or to set a cache limit:
Exactly the same situation here.
I’d love if PlexAmp did the same.
I currently chromecast music at home using GPM which caches everything.
When I go out in the car, I set GPM to “Downloaded only” mode and then I can just hit the “I’m feeling lucky” button and play a mix of downloaded & cached music, without having to worry that it starts using my data.
With PlexAmp I have some downloaded albums & playlists/radio mixes. This works quite well, however a “downloaded only” mode would be great, because when I go out in the car I have to remember to go into the download tab and only play music from there, a more distinct offline mode would work better I think.
Which also brings me to a bug, PlexAmp has used 200mb mobile data in the last couple of weeks even though I’ve only played from the download tab when not on WiFi.
Hmmm…the only thing I can think of is that this is data from browsing around the app, testing server connections, sending playback data, and not actually playing? That’s about 14MB a day, which is probably some browsing + album art and such. Said another way, 200MB isn’t a lot of media.
On iOS e.g. you can disable cellular data for the app entirely and you can still play downloads.
