How I make Plex use VLC to play Movies (local files)

First, this is not a tutorial. If you already have the knowledge, or are willing to learn how to set this all up with out any help from me, go for it.

Note 1: All my media files are stored and played locally. I use plex only as a GUI not as a media server.

Note2: My FF config is highly modified to prevent the browser or addons from checking for updates as well as any and all telemetry and I only use this browser to run plex. Use another browser for the internet because surfing the web on an outdated browser is not safe.

I use Firefox 55

With Greasemonkey 3.11

With PlexExternalPlayerAgentInstall.v1.12.0

and Plex-Media-Server-1.5.6

Plus the latest version of VLC

and it looks like this. (The circled icons are “Play Externally” and clicking them opens the title with VLC.

Individual files play ok. But with the “header” button i couldn’t make it work. Tested with latest Firefox ESR 60.4 and Waterfox 56.2.

But it is possible to open VLC, View, Playlist, navigate to Local network, Universal Plug and play, wait a moment to right window to populate dlna servers, navigate to video folder and add all video files to playlist.

I added a note to the body altered the title and to indicate that I only use plex as a GUI for local files.

Thanks, this was exactly what i was looking for!
I installed latest agent, and the script in Firefox. With one tweak in script to ‘replace path’. It’s working perfect. This really should be implemented in Plex by default. The browser player interface of Plex is horribly clunky and slow with limited custom functionality. It’s fine if your going to settle in to a 2 hour movie, but having the option to pop-up clips in potplayer or the like is 1000% more useful for clip browsing.

Your welcome.

I totally agree as do many others. The built in player is not good enough.

If you need a better player, install PMP. (free download below)
If you set it to the ‘desktop mode’ it will look just like the web app, but it will direct play a lot more file formats. Including all subtitle types and almost any audio format.
