Can I use an external player with the current version of Plex on PC?

I use a custom build of Firefox and plex on one PC that opens my media with VLC instead of the media player built into plex.

Obviously both programs are prevented from updating so they continue to function as I want them to.

I’m thinking about installing plex on a second PC and was wondering if the current version has the option to use an external player?

I don’t want to waste my time downloading and installing plex if it is still missing this basic function.

UPDATE: I changed the title and body to clarify my question.

When you mention Firefox, does that mean you were always using the Web app?

The real Plex Media Player plays a lot formats more directly.

Where is this option in the version you are using? I have never heard of that.

@BigWheel In the version I have it working on I am using a third party tool to enable it. Once upon a time the option to use an external player was built into plex.

I have never heard of such an option. Certainly not in the Web app. The only Plex app I know of that has it is the Android app. Plex Media Player never had it either.

Possibly you are thinking of Plex Home Theater or Plex Media Center which were our old HTPC apps that were just heavily customized ports of Kodi/XBMC so those had the same options as Kodi

Perhaps that is the case. Anyways, I just want to know if the current app supports using an external player. For some reason no one seems willing to answer that simple question.

I went ahead and posted how I get the older version to do it in another post.

Thanks for this. I installed script and agent on Firefox and is working with latest plex version 3.83.1
I replied to that thread but i wanted to re-iterate here how useful this is for clip browsing, and would suggest this feature be added to Plex by default!
