I’m using HDHomeRun and have a 2nd one coming today.

How many shows can I record at the same time?

Depends on which HDHR you ordered. Most have two tuners, the Prime has 3 but is for Cable TV. The number of tuners the device has determines how many shows can be recorded. So if you have 2 HDHR devices and each has 2 tuners you have 4 total tuners available so could record 4 shows at the same time. Be aware though if tuners are being used to view Live TV you will get failed recordings because Plex will be unable to request a tuner change channels for the recording.

ok so I have a second box coming today so that will be four shows we can record at the same time. So if we are recording four show then we will have to watch live to through their hdhomerun software correct or is the total four no matter what we use?

With version 1.6.1 I am able to record 4, but I have not tried more. With any later version I am only able to record 2 shows.

The version of PMS Software. 1.7.x has bugs and 1.8.x has had mixed results with regard to multiple tuners.

It will also depend on your network connectivity and server horsepower. Both can be mitigated by something like the HDHR Extend which can compress in the tuner box itself, or by sticking with SD shows.

Reiterating what I said earlier:

So if you are watching Live TV using one of the tuners, no matter what app you are using to watch Live TV, that tuner is in use. If Plex tries to use that tuner it will get I believe a 5XX error when it tries to start a recording which will show in the Plex Media Server log file. This will abort that recording. I personally have not even started using my Plex tuners for viewing Live TV other than testing some viewing when I have no recordings scheduled for a while. Hoping Plex will be bringing a feature to allow us to specify specific tuners for Live TV versus DVR. That way I can specify that 4 or more tuners will always be available to DVR, and the others can be used for Live TV; or specify that 2 tuners can be used for Live TV and the rest are for DVR.
