How much will adding extra RAM help since Plex server is 32bit?

As Plex Media Server is a 32bit program on Windows, and thus limited to 4gb of memory usage, how much will adding more RAM help? I’ve got the system default of 4GB in my system now.

Thanks

It won’t unless using the transcoder build. Even then it doesn’t use much. HDD speed and CPU speed / core count matter far more.

That’s what I was thinking. Darn. Now I’ve got less reason to persuade the better half that a memory upgrade is something I should invest in. :stuck_out_tongue:

If you have money to burn and don’t have an SSD drive for Plex then by all means bun some cash on an SSD. This will help speed things up a lot especially as your library size grows.

The more RAM you have, the more Windows is using for disk drive cache.
It helps sometimes.
But mostly it just adds operator comfort. (copying, moving, remuxing those large files on the server will finish faster)

To a limit. For a typical Plex server there is no reason to go above 16GB of RAM on Windows. If you aren’t running anything else besides Plex on that machine 8GB is fine. Far better ways of spending the cash on things that can help more like an SSD (if not already present).

If you have both already then just send cash my way for assistance and more tips. ← joking of course

I do run a web server on there, and currently have a single Hypver-V on there as well. But I don’t see a huge need to boost it. The system has 25% system RAM free, and has next to zero hard faults. I don’t have a SSD installed, but again, I don’t have a lot of people accessing my server. I’m the biggest user, and my family (parents, sister, brother in law, etc) that are remote, only view content every now and then. My system is never pegged.

More RAM would benefit my Hyper-V use, but for what I’m using it for currently, it doesn’t really justify it. Maybe if I were to spin up a Pfsense VM, I might need it, but for now, I’m not that nutty crazy. :stuck_out_tongue:
