I am looking at upgrading the RAM to 16GB but wanted to see what other people are using before I make a purchase. Also correct me if I am wrong the NAS uses DDR3L 204 pin RAM dual channels.
This is the ram I used. I bought if for My lenovo w510 before it died .
I had it lying around. so I threw it in there.
strange thing is it does not show it as DDR3L. Even though that is what they sent me. May want to double check that that is what they will send now.

Why do you want to upgrade RAM? Plex itself is not RAM intensive, as can be seen in the Support article on Plex Media Server Requirements:
In general, Plex Media Server doesn’t require large amounts of RAM. 2GB of RAM is typically more than sufficient and some installs (particularly Linux-based installs) can often happily run with even less. Of course, more RAM won’t hurt you and will certainly be helpful if you’re also doing other things on the computer.

Not saying don’t but it really is not necessary for Plex. Maybe put that money towards more storage.
The ram is only about $50
Can’t buy much storage with $50.
I am Running docker with Sonnar and Sabnzb if I can’t get NZBget working. SO even though I don’t need a full 16gb show knows what this will be running in the future.
If you are only running plex then Yea you don’t need to upgrade the memory
Maybe put that money towards more storage.
Yes, I know you can’t buy much storage for $50, hence the reason I said “towards” not “get”.
And I was asking OP. Appears to be a new user and want to make sure they knew Plex itself does not need a lot of memory.
Thanks for all of the comments/answers. I am new to Plex and I am leaning towards NAS storage with the WD PR4100 being my plan for the server - when it gets here. I don’t know if additional users will add to RAM consumption, but I figure more is more, plus future proofing. I know there are a lot of additional apps people run on their servers and I am going to look into them so RAM again. Plus what’s $50 as compared to $500 for the server? lol
Again thanks! I look forward to the same great responses and support in the future!

More RAM makes a lot of things working more fluently. If you want to enhance the RAM, the PR4100 can support up to 16 GB in total, so 2 x 8 GB SO-DIMM DDR3L Low-Voltage 1.35 Volt 1600 MHz each. The RAM sockets are both easy to access, just open the chassis. Please shut down the device and disconnect the power cable before you open the box.

Does the WD PR4100 support adding RAMdisk? Can you point the transcoding directory to the extra RAM to improve transcoding quality/speed?
was there any new news on if can use the extra ram for transcoding
