I have built a new server and wanted to start from scratch as there was too much old junk on my prior build and needed to start fresh.
But I really got into PlexAmp this summer and created some really great playlists that I would like to import into my new server. It doesn’t appear like there is a way to do that from all my googling so I figured I would ask here on the plex forum itself as its a bit difficult to imagine its not really possible. Even a registry copy would be good, anything that would make this possible without spending days recreating them would be good. Thanks, Bill
17 days, no way to move/export/import my Plex Playlists from an old plex media server to a newly built one? Kind of hard to imagine.
After a couple years+ most windows PC’s really need a wipe and reinstall just to keep them running at peak performance. Once Win 10 came around they made that much simpler to do with the built in Wipe/Reinstall menus. I do that even more often on my PC’s that i work on daily! (laptops/desktops) My plex PC is dedicated to SageTV DVR/Plex Media Player back end. And using WinGet to install everything again makes it take just a couple hours instead of all day. Now if I could only find a way to export my playlists. So i don’t have to spend days recreating them. -Bill
Keep in mind to also restore the media file locations exactly as they were before.
i.e. if your music has been on drive letter E:\Music before, it should be in this location on the new machine as well.
If the hardware allows it, put the plex data folder (this is NOT the folder with your media files!) onto a separate drive (preferably an internal NVMe stick, if your media collection is large).
This then also helps preserving the plex data in a case of a Windows “repair installation” or switching hardware.
I’m in the same boat and totally understand the concern OP has. As a Plexpass subscriber, I am completely dumbfounded at the lack of a playlist import/export feature.
What reasoning can there be for such a feature to not be implemented after all these years? The idea of needing to move or rebuild your Plex server is not some far out concept, it is a very possible scenario for many.
It’s things like this which really bother me and make me want to cancel my subscription. Clearly this product (Plexamp) is not a well thought solution for music.
Someone from Plex please re-educate me on what I am missing if I am wrong or just unaware.
Not being able to export that list you probably spent a LOT of time creating in the app is extremely short sighted of the developers if they want folks to purchase a subscription and switch to it. I am not sure what they might be thinking. Even google allowed me to export my playlist from their music app.
You would think some entrepreneur hasn’t created a way to do it and charge us for the app.
