How to access Plex Media Server when I am away from home?

I am setup on a Synology DS418play NAS. When I am on the road or just away from my home network, how can I watch the content that is on my Plex Media Server?

I would like to be able to watch either via the web, iPad or iPhone (or even someone else’s AppleTV)

Home Network Router is a Netgear Nighthawk RAX54v2

If everything works ‘automatically’ :wink:

  1. If you’re using the DSM firewall (Control Panel - Security) create a rule to allow port 32400 / TCP protocol.

  2. Settings - Remote Access - Show Advanced

  3. Now Enable Remote Access
    – It will turn Green initially (it’s opportunistic)
    – If it stays green, you’re done.
    – If it turns red, then your modem/router doesn’t support -OR- UPNP isn’t enabled in your Nighthawk.

  4. Now you can go back to your apps (mobile phone on LTE is perfect test), restart them to get them to update and pull a fresh server list and port info.

  5. If all is working correctly, you’ll have access just as if you were on LAN (except for speeds)

Chuck, please file a bug on that. :slight_smile: There are so many posts where people do not understand that indicator.

@BanzaiInstitute

I have written it up.

I’ve asked them to change the indicator to NOT BE OPTIMISTIC and WAIT until after remote access is confirmed BEFORE showing GREEN status.

You’re a legend @ChuckPa, thank you!
