Remote Access not available outside your network

Hi,

I’ve installed Plex Media Server on my Synology DS218j and everything seems to be working fine within my network, but I can’t Remote Access to work.

When I disable and re-enable Remote Access, the status will briefly show the green ‘Fully accessible outside your network’ but then reverts to the red ‘Remote Access not available outside your network’.

It did however work briefly (for at least 20 minutes) last night, and during that time I was able to access it via my phone, which wasn’t connected to the home network. This morning though it wasn’t working again.

I’ve read through a lot of threads for similar issues across the internet and I think I’ve managed to rule out the following:

Double-NAT: following the guides on this website showed there was no double-NAT issue. My ISP also doesn’t utilise CG-NAT.
UPNP: My router is UPNP-compatible.
Static IP address: I’ve set up a static private IP address for the diskstation.
Port Forwarding: I’ve set up manual port forwarding for both the diskstation ports 5000/5001 and for plex 32400 and used the ‘Manually specify public port’ option. While using this option I also tried disabling UPNP on the router.
Port Filtering: My ISP does perform port filtering by default, which I have disabled.

I’ve also double-checked that the diskstation is externally accessible via quickconnect.

I feel like I must have something configured wrong, but I’m stumped - as far as I can tell I’ve followed the instructions correctly…

Any help would be much appreciated! :slightly_smiling_face:

Cheers!

Hi leftdragon,
I had the same issue for a while and my issue was that my Pi was connected via Powerline Adapter, which is a NAT too. It is not uncommon to see a NAS running of Powerline to be able to move it to a far corner.

Hi @Super4Jet - thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately I don’t think that’s the case here, the NAS is connected by ethernet to the router and the router’s plugged into the fibre box - no Powerline Adapters.

How about this: The fibre box is the first NAT, you router the second NAT?

Hi - thanks again, I looked into that and it shouldn’t be an issue.

However - I think I’ve figured it out through some more testing. I think the message Plex is giving is incorrect, as I can actually access Plex remotely and uptimerobot is reporting no downtime for http://[external-IP]:[external-port]/web/index.html

Once I realised that, I did a quick search of the forums and there were a few posts reporting a similar issue, that for some reason the Plex server that checks remote access isn’t able to confirm it even though it’s working.

Thanks for your help in the meantime, really appreciate it!
