How to access Plex on NAS drive with PC off

Hi,

Just trying to get some assistance. I have plex installed on my computer and my NAS drive (Synology DS216play).

The media is all on the NAS drive.

I access it using my home network (stream media to the TV via PS4).

But the media is only available when my computer is on.

Any way to bypass this?

Thanks.

It sounds like you’ve installed the PS4 app and pointed it at the computer as the main home screen ?

If so, all you need to do is reset it to point to the PMS server on the NAS as the default.

I’m not sure how the PS4 player is structured but for me, I’ve found it easier to just reinstall the apps and point them to the desired PMS server as I install them.

Thanks for this. I will try reinstall on the PS4.

It seems like the PC is the centre for plex distribution because even if the NAS is on, if the PC is off I can’t access my media from my phone etc either.

Is there a way of making the synology the ‘main’ media server which co-ordinates everthing as opposed to the pc?

Yes.

Install PMS on the Synology, all setup and ready to go.

Usually the easiest way to make the phone go right to it is a quick re-install of the phone app then Pick the “Preferred Server”. ( I always nuke the app and start over – i’m lazy too haha)

:boom:

problem solved.

Sorry if this is obvious. When I set up the plex media server running on the NAS I had to use the PC to do this.

Even now to start the plex on NAS I have to log into synology on my PC and launch the plex package from within synology.

Is there a way to keep plex from the synology ‘always on’ so I don’t have to launch it from the PC each time?

When you are in the Synology Package Center,
you “Start” the Plex app (which is a service).

It automatically starts every time DSM starts
