How to add individual TV documentaries and shows by using OTHER VIDEOS option

I have a couple of folders that consist of PBS Nova downloads, History channel stuff, Frontline, a real hodgepodge of other documentaries and shows from many sources. I tried putting them under TV shows but PLEX would just list them as a TV season if it could find a match. All the rest of the videos were invisible.
There is another PLEX category that eluded me. “Other Videos”. lets me point to the folders and ALL of their content shows up. It is a mess as far as naming the tiles and the tile poster is mostly useless but by either highlighting the name or editing the tile I can find out the contents. TADA!

If Plex isn’t adding videos to a tv-show library at all, that’s most likely because of poor/bad file naming (Plex not recognizing your files as actual tv-show content).

If it’s actual tv shows, the best way forward will be to review the file naming and adjust it so Plex can match the shows:

  1. ensure the files are named in accordance with Plex’ tv-show naming schema
  2. check the file names reflect the official name of the show (e.g. as listed on TheTVDb.com.

The Other videos category will create a plan library of videos without matching them… so if you want to maintain a tv-show structure that’s not going to work for you.
If you cannot find the shows in TheTVDb.com or your files have embedded metadata you could instead add the files to a regular tv-show type library:
create a dedicated library and set the agent to Personal Media Show (Manage Library > Edit... > Advanced > Agent)

Just name the file what it is:

A quick Google should, in most cases, return a landscape shaped image and a few words in the Description and you’ve got a nice place to put stuff to watch and delete - or whatever.

Other Videos is always ready to receive any test files I might make with Handbrake/other so they’re instantly available to test on everything in the Plexiverse.

Other Videos is a Handy area and is as Pretty, or Horrific, as you choose to make it…lol

Most definitely agree that changing the names to a more readable and searchable format would go a long way to alleviate the missing shows. Unfortunately, most of these videos are years old and are just a single show from some series or another. With 237 of these old, mismatched, and probably unlisted shows, it is the reason for me not to have bothered to fix them up as I have with movies or other TV series.
Before PLEX, I would just open the folder on my HTPC and picked the show I would want to watch. With Plex working on my Samsung OLED TVs tho, that option went away.
Thanks for the links tho and I will take a look. Oh wait! I used these links to fix up my movies and TV shows, heh.
