[How To] Bypass VPN for Plex Nord VPN

I’ve seen tons of posts about people not being able to get their Plex remote access with a VPN and rather than post to all of them and look like a spam bot I decided to put it here. There are a lot of work arounds and complicated ways for people that don’t have a VPN with bypass or port forward/tunneling. I had this problem as well with IPVanish and NordVPN, and this solution will work for all vpn providers. I can only explain for Windows.

I actually got this to work with nord vpn using open vpn community version. It runs damn stable with windows 11 too. I have my hardware nic metric at 1, Static ip from router, manually forwarded port 32400 on router and now it’s working great. Also make sure to go into allow an application through firewall in windows and make sure plex media server is checked for both public and private network and it works great. Always a green checkmark on remote axcsess now. Also make sure to add the app.plex.tv in the vpn bypass program as well as the PLEX IP LINKS, they change ips once in awhile so if it goes red just update the ip from page add them in the vpn bypass program usually couple of months they change.

n.b. Past users of this software often come to these here forums, to complain that they cannot contact some or all plex servers anymore.

Make sure to empty out your hosts file if you don’t run the service anymore!

Interesting, I’ve run this software for a year with no issue. If you ever uninstall this program make sure you remove it as a service in the program first and you shouldn’t have a issue. I recommend the latest open vpn community download 2.5.5 with the nord config files for open vpn very easy. My pms runs 24/7 never vpn down ever. I also have manually specified port checked in plex as well for the port forwarding of course.

Yep I used nord vpn reccomended server utility on there website with no vpn on so it would find me the best server location, then I went to the open vpn files for nord vpn and downloaded the udp of the server that nord recommended me. It works great. I think the metric setting is very important. I set my default ethernet adapter metric to 1 and that is all I needed to change really.

I setup Nord VPN on my DD-WRT router using OpenVPN. I enable Upnp and even though it shows that the plex server have the port forward, i still don’t have remote access to the server. I tried to follow every solution i can find and none work for me. Do you have any solution?

Don’t use nord vpn on router pc only this does not work on routers with vpn on so just use the vpn on pc only

So with the app on the PC should i change the protocol to TCP instead of UDP since Plex uses TCP protocol for remote streaming?

It shouldn’t matter I wouldn’t think. I always use udp with 0 issues. I use open vpn community community version with udp open vpn files.

Plus I had to set static ip in router as well as manuall port forward plex 32400 port there is tons of info on how to port forward the plex port
