I’ve seen tons of posts about people not being able to get their Plex remote access with a VPN and rather than post to all of them and look like a spam bot I decided to put it here. There are a lot of work arounds and complicated ways for people that don’t have a VPN with bypass or port forward/tunneling. I had this problem as well with IPVanish and NordVPN, and this solution will work for all vpn providers. I can only explain for Windows.
First go to https://dev.thronic.com/VPN-Bypass/ and download VPNBypass.
I do not own this software. I just found it useful.
(Edited March 2, 2020 the website changed)
Install it and run it
You will get to this screen after you open it
In the next one labled Target Gateway IP you put in your Router’s IP address.
Then you click restart service after it turns yellow for update.
If you want this to run at startup you can put it in the windows startup folder or you can run it as a hidden scheduled task. If you do the hidden task, you won’t see it running except in task manager. If you run it in a startup folder it will run and need minimized to taskbar (NOT TRAY) after it launches at boot.
Not to change the topic too much, but why not implement a virtual pc with virtualbox. It took me 15 minutes to look up instructions and an hour to implement. It changed EVERYTHING as far as game changers go. It was really simple and easy. This issues doesn’t exist anymore.
I tried this hoping it would fix my VPN issues and using remote access, but it did not., When I use this, now I get red x’s and no IP address at all in the Private and Public Fields.
OMG you are a life saver this fixed my situation. i have been fighting with PIA for the last 4 hours and reading tons of forums this was the solution and so easy. i was using Purevpn and that was working but there download speeds were terrible. i had nord before and im sure this would have worked perfect for that as well. wish i would have found this sooner
Is this needed if you don’t use remote access?
I watch my plex on my Xbox and my server is on my Laptop all wireless. I should be able to use the Xbox without remote access since they are all on my network.
But I think the VPN also makes it where local clients can’t see the server as well because it still makes Xbox not work when VPN is enabled.
edit:
I feel so dumb now.
I simply turned off remote access and turned on DLNA (local access) and it now works with VPN enabled. I can’t believe I spent a weeks worth of headaches just to realize I didn’t need remote access to watch on my home Xbox One. /facepalm
I decided to turn off DNLA and it still streamed to the Xbox just fine. So I think it was just having remote access enabled that made the server unavailable with the VPN on.
Is anyone else having issues in downloading this application? When attempting to download, I get… https://nedrelid.net/1DLGATE/?file=18 stating the page isn’t working…
Anyone want to give me a hint with the authentication? I tried to answer day in both spots then the top or the lower and nothing so I think I’m missing something lol
Edit: picture added for context
You need to put the answer to the password question (currently ‘day’ without apostrophes) in the first field and the 3 char code that the portal provides (e.g. ‘Djb’ also without apostrophes per the example above) into the second field. Then hit the ‘Unlock’ button. You should be presented with the install file ready to download on the second screen.
The file is clean of Viruses. It is tagged because it will edit your hosts file.
As for their new site, I guess it’s been downloaded alot so they put the file behind a verification. I would upload it here but not sure it’s allowed. Since it’s not my software I don’t want to upload to github or some other free hosting as I don’t own it.
All you have to do is read the sentence and complete it in the upper box then type the 3 character verification.
For those that have trouble with local network access after this make sure you enable local network access authorization in settings.
Go to Settings > Network >
enable Show Advance settings in the top right
Then under “Local Networks” put your router ip then /24 for example
192.168.0.1/24
Then put that under “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth” as well. So that it is in both locations. Then Save changes.
This will allow local network regardless of VPN or internet access.
If you still can’t connect then you may also want to go to the TV and go to settings and Manual Connections and add the ip address of the server.
