How to choose the metadata provider for a specific tv-show

Server Version#: 1.26.0.5715
Player Version#: Web 4.80.0

As far as I understand the new “Plex TV Series” agent pulls the metadata from various sources like TMDB and TVDB. This generally works quite well. However, for some shows the metadata on TMDB is better and for other shows TVDB provides the better data.

Is there a way to force the agent to pull the metadata for a specific show only from a specific provider like e.g. TVDB?

Thank you!

Unfortunately you can’t do that. The new agent is a consolidation from the multiple sources. Plex does wizardry behind the scenes to figure out what it considers is best. You can’t control that or even configure the agent to say give me metadata from TMDB or TVDB.

I did create a feature request to add this but its not got any traction.

If this is primarily due to a different order of the episodes on TMDB vs. TheTVDB, this is worth a try:
Edit the show at its highest level
go to the Advanced tab
set “Episode ordering” to either “The Movie Database”, “TheTVDB (Aired)”, “TheTVDB (DVD)”, or “TheTVDB (Absolute)”.
Refresh Metadata of the whole show.

No, it is not about the order of the episodes, its about the quality of the episode descriptions which is sometimes better on TMDB and sometimes better on TVDB, depending on the show.

Would be nice to give the agent a hint which provider to prefer for a specific show - or choose which description to take (like the selection of the poster where you can choose from posters of all providers).

While I’d personally love to see this I don’t believe plex development will ever implement it.

They have moved to a single set of consolidated metadata within their backend. If they where to do this they’d need to store metadata in their backend from TVDB, TMDB and IMDB separately when they differ.

Better solution maybe to have this stored locally in some local NFO file so at least then we could control it.
