How to Connect to Internet without constantly Running Plex Connect?

plexconnect

Hello Everyone!
I found this very useful Software PlexConnect. It really solved my problem of streaming my content to my Daughters' Room, so they can watch all their favorite Movies and TV Shows stored on our Home PC.

I followed all the instructions to set it up, and it WORKS GREAT!

My one and ONLY problem is that in order to get access to the web via my Apple TV, I need to be running PlexConnect 24/7.
and also every time I Shut Down my PC I have to Manually Change the DNS Address in The ATV.

Is there something I can do to fix this?
My Electricity bill is up to the skies because my PC HAS TO BE ON, in order to connect my ATV Online.

EDIT:

I Tried to Install TOMATO Firmware to my Router, and I Bricked it.

Now I have a TP-LINK Archer C50
It has a DHCP Server configuration screen..
Is there something i can try on this? (without installing custom firmware)

There are two other options besides having to change the DNS value in the ATV3:

  1. Install PlexConnect in a device that runs 24x7 (such as a router or NAS)
  2. Disable PlexConnect’s DNS service and use dnsmasq service instead (available in some routers)
In the case of ATV2, besides these options, you can install PlexConnect on it.
Some routers can also send magic packets to wake-up PlexConnect and/or Plex Media Servers

There is a 3rd option to if you jailbreak your ATV you can then run plexconnect on the ATV itself

That’s what I meant when I said that PlexConnect could be installed in ATV2.

Well, the thing is that my Apple TV cannot be Jailbroken.
I tried.

How can I Install PlexConnect in my Router?

Check if your router allows installation of pythyon. If not, check if you can replace its firmware with OpenWRT or Tomato. If not, you can’t install PlexConnect in the router.

Regarding dsnmasq, check if you can access the router in line mode, with admin priviliges. If yes, check if the firmware supports dnsmasq. If yes, I will have to find instructions to guide you.

If above actions fail you need either to buy a new router, or choose another option.

I was doing some Research, and Apparently, “Tomato” has a custom Firmware for my Router (Netgear WNDR3400v3).

If you could explain me what “Tomato” does, and how can it solve my Porblem?
Thank you for your time and help…

I am not adept of replacing base firmwares with custom ones, specially during HW warranty, unless there are no other options. Apparently the base firmware of the WNDR3400v3 supports dnsmasq, so probably this is the way to go.

I’m not a specialist in the area, but looking post https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/414157/#Comment_414157 maybe the following will work:

  1. Opt for solution 1a) of above post but instead of 172.16.32.2 use the IP of your PlexConnect server
  2. Edit Settings.cfg so that port_dnsserver = 8053 (same port as 1a) above)
  3. In ATV the DNS should be automatic
The objective is that the router solves all DNS requests, but when anyone (ATV or other) requests access to trailers.apple.com the request is sent to PlexConnect on port 8053, which will then handle the request.

If you opted to intercept another app instead of trailers take a look at Q10 in PlexConnect FAQS.

Thank you for having the time to search a solution for my problem, I ended up by Bricking my modem, and I had to get a new one.

I am going to do some research before I try this again.

My Apple TV is a 3rd Gen and there is no Jailbreak available for it, so I can’t Install Plex on it.

Did you check if your new router supports dnsmasq before buying it ?
