PlexConnect is running on my Mac Mini and works like a charm!
However, I allow my Mac Mini to go to sleep.
- Is there a workaround to keep using my Apple TV Apps (Netflix for instance) when my Mac Mini of PlexConnect itself is down? or;
- Is there a way to setup a fall-back DNS server for my Apple TV?
This way I can enjoy both worlds AND allow my Mac Mini to be eco-friendy! :)
Set your DNS back to automatic? Doesn’t plexconnect forward all the other DNS requests to the appletv?
There are basically 3 options:
Install PlexConnect on a machine that is up and running 100% of the time
Use a Tomato router (see post https://forums.plex.tv/topic/70767-using-dnsmasqiptables-to-redirect-dnshttp-traffic-on-tomato/?hl=iptables)
Change the aTV DNS to auto if none of the above is possible, and back to manual when PMS content is needed
In my own case I use option #1 (using my NAS), but I would use option #2 if I had a capable router.
You could use a old jail broken device to host plexconnect as well with airplane mode There is a lot of options but I think a rPI is the cheapest afaik as a always on plexconnect host.
It's a shame my Airport Extreme doesn't support advanced DNS rules and setting.
For now I stick with the manual DNS settings toggle on the aTV, maybe in de future there will be an Raspberry Pi.
Thx!!

4th option: If you have a ATV2 you can jailbreak it and remove the need for DNS redirection and hijacking another app.
