How to enable transcoding for DLNA remote client?

Hi All,

I’ve been using Plex for few years now and with all excitement I have installed Plex server also to my dad’s linux server. He has WDTV and accessing Plex via DLNA. All is working fine except Shared video. Shared video is video from my local home Plex server (shared between Plex users), however this video is trying to be played as direct stream over internet, but internet connection cannot handle that traffic.

Is there any way how would I force transcoding video for particular DLNA client, which I know is going to be my dad’s WDTV?

I have played little bit with “DLNA client preferences” but with no luck. I couldn’t find any documentation for this. I tried setting like ‘IP=63.163.183.213,DirectPlay=false’, where IP was public IP of ma dad (mentioned IP is not valid). Should I be using public IP of his router or IP of Plex server, where it is local LAN IP?

is there any documentation what DLNA client preferences options are or would you have config script for me, which would transcode video for particular DLNA client?

thanks
Roman

I haven’t used DLNA in a long time, but it should work like this:
Your dad must travel (via his WDTV) to his server and pick the virtual folder ‘preferences’.
In there is a file “to play” to select the resolution and bandwidth for remote streams.

There is nothing you can do on your server except limiting the bandwidth of ‘remote’ streams in general, for all users. (Only available in newer server versions).

Yes, that is how it is working, dad’s WDTV travels to His local Plex server, where his server can “see” my shared folders by my Plex.

You said I can control bandwidth of remote streams. How is this implemented? When bandwidth is too low for played file, is server transcoding for client then?

Where can I limit bandwidth for remote DLNA streams?

Is there somewhere documentation for DLNA client preferences?

Yes, that is how Plex is working.

I already mentioned it above. Since DLNA is such a basic protocol, the settings for the Plex Server are implemented as a series of virtual media folder and files. The user “plays” a particular file in order to activate a certain preference.

When you look at your Plex DLNA server through any DLNA player, you will see these virtual folders.

Only this: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200350536-DLNA

Using BubbleUPNP Android app i can see the Preferences Folder, i can select/play the folders. But the Settings don’t stick. Everytime i go back 1 folder and check again it’s stuck on standard settings. Any idea how to evade that?
