How to fix home videos that have blank thumbnails?

Any reason you don’t just delete and re-create the Library? You have corruption in the DB or the Metadata and need to clear it out.

Tried that back in April and no change. Weird that the database only has problems with home videos and not my thousands of movies or TV shows…that are all in the same database.

You tried what exactly? It could be the database or the linked metadata files which usually requires deleting the Library and files then recreating the library.

You never uploaded logs so their is no action for Plex to take.

If you bothered to read what I was referencing, you’d see that somebody back in April suggest I delete the library and add it back. I did that and it didn’t work.

As for uploading logs, other people are reporting the same, exact problem and logs were provided and Plex support just lets the posts go unanswered. This isn’t a new problem. It’s been experienced by many people for many years. I think Plex needs to add an option to ‘refresh thumbnail’ for stuff like home movies.

Thanks for the link but I’ve already tried everything in there with no change on my side.

Tiebierius: im having the same problems as gene0915, ive posted my logs at Missing/blank thumbnails for personal media videos if you want to take a look at them. really thought the command line method would work, but it did not. would love some help. or if you know how to migrate my watched history to a new install of plex (Moving Plex Watched History from Windows to Windows), id love to hear. thanks for trying!

Nobody loves to keep repeating the same thing over and over again.
FACT: The Movie Databases you are asking about won’t stay forever. I can assure you of that.
Here is my solution
All of my movies have 3 files… Don’t like it but I did.

  1. The File itself.
  2. An Information file. Usually a .NFO It contains all of the info I want to see.
To make this file is several easy ways. Thru Sonarr for TV Series Radarr for movies and believe it or not WMP for music. In each of the programs is a tag to create an .nfo for Videos and a MP3 update in WMP.
  3. A JPG of the subject movie, TV Series or Album

The first one is visible but the other 2 I select Hidden for them. If you keep the NFO/JPG format, you will be able to search the directory and set the properties en mass.

For Audiobooks I do something rather special.
I collect all Audiobooks under the primary author, Then Book, Then concurrent parts of that book. If a book can stand on its own. For example The Lord of the Rings. Each will be under the author. If not, it is a part of the first book it is 3 below. For example The Hobbit Part 1 Part 2 Part 3.

I create a rich text file for the book. I Center the Title and author at the top.
Next is the publisher
The date acquired. Believe me, it comes in handy when you copy it back and forth,
I then Insert the highest Picture of the album I can find. Either in the MP3 or from google.
Next because I have the correct website up for viewing. I copy and paste the Summary
The IBN number if available.
The length of the book in Hours and Minutes. I also reference if I have it on CD/DVD/Digitial

The last thing in each book is a playlist. Don’t snigger. If you don’t get back to the book in months, the playlist is an excellent way to verify you have all the parts to the book.

As for Home Movies. I know a few ways I do it so I will kick you in the right direction.
Home videos are one of the worst and hardest things to keep in a collection with any skill.
Remember the JPG I mentioned. When you are going to save it on your hard drive… Open up a Rich Text Document… You won’t be saving this one.
Fill out on the screen all the details of the Home movie in LARGE LETTERS like MY DAY AT THE BEACH JULY 4, 2022 with MWSDM
Center it on your monitor ant take a snapshot of it with your computer. Not with you camera but your computer. Save that with the same name as your video and hide it.
HINT HINT… If you have thumbnails on, your computer will create them from the jpg.

Hope this help…

Forgot to tell you. The blanks thumbnail is because your movie has 1 black frame at the front of the video . Don’t know why but it does. My post below shows one fix. I did some editing of my home movies to create a Poster that would come up but I can tell you that you will tire of it fast. Editing software sucks if you don’t know exactly how to use it.
