Plex Not Creating Chapter Thumbnails for Extras

I just love it when things go backwards! Makes you really feel like things are moving… Um, backwards!

In March 2019, this very same problem was reported, was then fixed after a few months, and now 2 and half years later, it seems to be happening again…

Plex Not Creating Thumbnails for Extras

Hello all My Plex is no longer creating thumbnails for Extras, and the issue persists following a server reboot. I have fixed this before by completely taking the extras files off of the Plex drive, refreshing the library, and then adding them back, but even that is not working these days plus seems like a lot of work to have to do each and every time I add extras. It bares mentioning that it is successfully generating thumbnails for FF and RW and I have it set to do that as soon as it finds n…

This has actually been broken for around 3 to 4 months, and I’m not sure which version introduced the regression, however I do know that I actually noticed it around May '21, and in August, I started to plough though all of my extras to figure out which ones have been effected.

That took some time, I can tell ya!!

Looking at my Updates folder, it could have been 1.23.2 to 1.23.3… or earlier!

Here are the points of interest…

1. Chapter thumbnails for the movie itself are successfully generated.
2. My settings are… Generate chapter thumbnails > as a scheduled task and when media is added.
3. Refreshing metadata does not correct the missing thumbnails.
4. Doing the “plex dance” does not correct the missing thumbnails.
5. This can be replicated each and every time I add new extras that have chapters.
6. I am using the “new” movie Agent. Upgraded a few months ago. Is that where the problem is?
7. The XML actually shows that the chapter thumbnails are missing, compared to the movie itself.

XML for the actual movie, clearly shows the thumbnails for the movie chapters…

XLM for the extra that has chapters, clearly shows there are no thumbnails…

The chapters are available for use across all apps, however there are no thumbnails…

Just updated to PMS version 1.24.5.5173, and still broken. And yes, I no longer accept beta updates as I’ve been burned too often!

The plex dance doesn’t work.
Refresh Metadata doesn’t work.
Manually forcing the scanner to regenerate Chapter Thumbs by command line doesn’t work.

XML still shows missing thumbs…

Logfile after the manual command line shows practically nothing…

I reported this just over a week ago and still no Plex bods commenting.

Gonna give it another day or so then start tagging Plex bods!

I cannot reproduce this issue on my side. Could you add a new item with extras and scan it into your library, then grab your server logs and send them to me.

Timings were…

18.20… Moved into place, and Refreshed Metadata → Movie\Other\Test Extra with Chapters.mkv
18.21… Plex started generating chapter thumbnails for the movie itself.
18.22… Scan Library Files.
18.25… Gather logs.

Curious…

Just checked again, and I can see that it has managed to create a thumb for the 1st chapter, which is also reflected in the XML, however the other 2 chapters still have no thumb and the XML showed no thumbs when I checked it before hand…

Okay, I misunderstood your issue. I thought you were saying extras where not generating thumbnails, but you’re saying it’s embedded chapters in the extra that aren’t getting thumbnails generated, gotcha!

Will investigate this.

I was actually a little confused how this could have been misunderstood, but then I re-read my thread title, and I guess that could have been it, so I’ve amended the title.

But indeed yes, it’s the Chapter Thumbnails for the extras that is not being created.

Even a quick comment to say that “you have no news yet” would be better than the tumbleweeds I am getting.

D’ya wanna know something? In my profession as an IT consultant, I would actually be fired for treating a customer this way!

And what actually makes it worse, is that you are on these forums regularly, which means you are actively ignoring me / this topic.

So just added some new extras, and the problem is still apparent. Current PMS version I am on is… 1.25.2.5319.

Would really appreciate some love here as I’ve got tons of extras that have been affected by this, and what makes it worse, is that I am also in the process of moving content to a different drive, and of course once I move the extras, it breaks the extras chapter thumbnails as each item gets a new Video ratingKey.

Yes I had a rant some weeks ago, but lets be honest here… It was justified!

It’s now 2 months since @drzoidberg33 last responded, and that’s just not how you keep customers happy!
