How to fix metadata for DVR recorded shows

This station has recently been missing a show’s Season and Episode data in the EPG. Probably a temporary bug. This results in the recorded files being dumped into a generic “Season 2023” bucket.

Now this is an old syndicated show with easily identifiable episodes. My question is, can these orphaned episodes be repaired to contain the proper Season/Episode metadata?

In the UI there seems to be no “Fix Match” feature under Editing, dead end there.

I have experimented a bit with renaming the resulting files themselves without much luck.

Is there conventional wisdom for this situation? For example I end up with files like this.

‘/local/PLEX_OTA/TV/The Simpsons (1989)/Season 2023/The Simpsons (1989) - 2023-04-19 01 00 00 - The Simpsons.ts’

Thanks to the experts, not urgent just annoying.

You cannot “fix match” individual episodes, only the show. To fix episodes, you need to fix the file names to match the correct episode or date. You cannot mix and match the 2. Also, there is no Simpson episode that aired on 4/19. If that is the recorded date, that doesn’t help Plex. You’re going to need to rename these manually.

Hi moviefan. Thanks for your reply. I did try the renaming trick. e.g. I renamed the file following rules as all the other files created by DVR service:

‘The Simpsons (1989) - S30E03 - My Way or the Hightway to Heaven.ts’

I also moved a copy to a new folder called “Season 30”.

Rescanning the library afterwards only shows that the file exists, but with no metadata (episode details ,etc missing) Was hoping maybe there was some guidance to simply relabeling them within the database. The ‘Edit’ function lets me do a few things but not all.

Also I assume that by renaming files I lose any metadata that was provided by the DVR service such as commercial break tags.

cheers

What scanner/agent do you have configured for this library? If you’re using Plex TV Series (or the legacy TVDB/TMDB agents/scanners), after the file is renamed/matched, perform a “Refresh Metadata” on it.

If you have your library configured to perform ad detection for all items, you can “Analyze” the item to trigger ad detection again, if the markers were lost (they likely will be).

Interestingly, I’ve had to take the above steps for DVRed episodes of The Simpsons in the past myself.

Refresh metadata is not doing the trick. Configured for Plex TV Series. I even tried emptying the trash.

Anyway. Once renaming the file I am able to get proper Season/Episode.

Then hand edit the metadata for the file, I can copy/paste from the tvdb directly (ugh) to get things looking right.

It gets the job done for the few episodes while the local station sorts it out.

Thanks for the tip, I did not know that post-recording I could cause the commercial detection to run again in this way. That piece worked perfectly.
