How to get around having to turn the TV on before the Plex server so as to have sound through HDMI .

I Have a Plex server (built on a Dell Vostro PC platform) that has no sound through the HDMI interface unless the TV is ALWAYS on before the Plex server is brought up. If I replug the HDMI cable I get the sound back. Is there any way to easily force an HDMI reset so as to get the sound back without having to get up, crawl over the TV and replug the HDMI connection?

What’s your specific setup? Is audio failing across all client devices? Or just on that specific TV?

This could make sense if you’re watching on the local TV with the PC directly connected. The PC may not recognize it has an audio/video device connected if it’s not powered on and it won’t activate the driver without it.

I bet if you dig pretty deep into your PC settings, there might be ways to keep these things awake regardless of what it thinks it has connected. Also, there are HDMI devices out there on the interwebs that can solve this issue by faking the always on signal.

Thanks AR24 for the reply. I did find a good work around for the problem.

If you right-click the speaker and go into sound settings I found that if I disable every sound device except the HDMI sound object the computer cannot “fail over” to the speakers or headphones if it cannot find the hdmi connection so it is now and will always be locked into using the HDMI connection no matter what happens. – In short, disable everything except the HDMI sound devices.

Found this doesn’t always work either but it helps a lot.
